Dedicated video memory: 0 MB Solved

Question

Hello, I'm quite lost, so let me explain: I had Windows 7 64-bit, my BIOS version was A03 and my dedicated video memory on my HD 2500 graphics showed 64 MB of dedicated video memory. Then I switched to Windows 8.1, and it dropped to only 32 MB of dedicated video memory, still with the same BIOS A03. Recently, I updated my BIOS to A05 and now, poof, I have nothing at all. I don't understand why switching OS resulted in a halving of my dedicated memory, and even worse, why updating my BIOS led to having no dedicated video memory. I'm not really sure if the performance has decreased, if anyone could explain this to me because I am really lost !!

For the BIOS update, that's normal; after the update, the BIOS is usually reset, so you need to reconfigure it. As for the video memory, Windows' estimation is not reliable; it only takes an improperly optimized driver for the current version of Windows to display all sorts of information. The only amount of video memory allocated to the GPU is the one defined in the BIOS ;)  -- The best antivirus is between the chair and the keyboard.

I tried plenty of drivers for my graphics card and still 0 MB, but it's a Latitude 3330 Intel Celeron 1070U 1.6 GHz, 8 GB DDR3 my laptop, and so I don't have the option for the amount of dedicated graphics memory, so I can't configure anything :/

You can always check the video memory with GPU-Z to see what it finds for you, but keep in mind that the OS update cannot affect the BIOS settings ;)  -- The best antivirus is located between the chair and the keyboard.

Well, no software displays the same quantity, which reinforces my idea of the inaccuracy of Windows. If you haven't changed the BIOS settings, there is no reason to worry; I have this issue on a fleet of Dell PCs running Windows 7 Pro, and it doesn't stop them from working ;)  -- The best antivirus is located between the chair and the keyboard.

It's true that everything works well, but isn't performance, for example in 3D, affected?

No, not in this case because it's just an issue with the driver that doesn't transmit the correct information. The use of video memory is managed by the GPU itself, not by the OS, so this inaccuracy has no impact on that. The problems that may arise are the lack of GPU performance or an inappropriate/outdated driver ;)  -- The best antivirus is between the chair and the keyboard.
