Thank you for your reply. It's a Samsung Galaxy Mini 2. :) Sorry for the time it took me to respond. Isn't Android universal? I mean, does the version vary depending on the phone?

  there is no official Samsung Kit Kat version for your mini2 ...... unless you root your phone and install custom ROMs... in 4.4......

Would you happen to know a method that would allow me to root my phone (without installing a ROM) in a way that is less cumbersome than most tutorials that require installing often unreliable files? All my personal data is on my phone, and I don't want to host a virus.

  if you go to serious sites like Phonandroid or XDA....there are no viruses......as for your data, just back them up to avoid losing them.....don't forget that if one day you have to reset your phone for any reason, you will lose everything, so regular backups.......

It's oddly surprising, I thought Android was officially at 4.4.3 (KitKat).. for me, if we get a 4.4.4, it's either a development version or a misunderstanding of terminology.
