Word and footnote

Hello,

I'm writing to you because I'm having a little problem with footnotes in Word. I'm not sure if I can be clear, here it is: when I create my footnote, the separation line (between the main text and the note) is put in place, so far so good. But I have some strange gaps that appear between this line and my reference note, and I can't seem to remove them.

In the end, it looks something like this:

I can't delete the space between the two for some reason, I've checked my stylesheet, and nothing seems to explain it.

Do you have any idea?

Thank you and have a great day.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 1.5.0.11

Hello,

After quite a bit of struggle to find the solution, I am able to provide you with the elements of the answer.

First, go to the display section and check the "draft" button.

Then just go to the references tab and check the "show notes" button.

At the bottom of the page, go to the various tabs and manually delete the spaces.

Best of luck,

A.P

Good evening,

a little tip, I just had the same problem. If you change the format, for example, if you switch from Word 2007 to Word 2003, the lines separating the separator line and the footnote will disappear. The method is: Home/Modify Styles/Style Set and Word 2003.

For those who want to change the side on which the separator line is aligned, the solution proposed by Fredisel should work:
"Go to normal view (up to Word 2003) or draft view (Word 2007) and then you need to display the footnotes. You will then see a window at the bottom of your page allowing you to manage the page break separators." Then just use the usual buttons "align left" or "align right".

I'm sorry, I forgot to specify what I call a flyspeck.
It is the symbol that appears when you go to a new line or skip lines in Word.

In fact, my problem is how to remove these spaces that have been inserted in my footnote?

Thank you

In order to remove those "footnotes," you need to go to normal view (up to Word 2003) or draft view (Word 2007) and then you need to display the footnotes. You will then see a window at the bottom of your page allowing you to manage the footnote separators and there you will be able to delete all the "footnotes" that are bothering you for the layout. For the illustrated version, you can see at the link: http://theses.univ-lyon2.fr/index.php. I hope this could help you, in any case, it has just solved my problem which was identical to mine.

Thank you Fredisel!

It solved my problem too! No idea how the separators created such awkward spaces like that?
Well, why, I guess, we don't care, long live the solution!

Hello everyone,

This comment shed some light for me, but I have another issue with the footnotes.

My problem is that I have a space on every page between the last footnote and the end of my page.......

I've tried going into draft view, showing the footnotes, and making adjustments, but I can't get rid of this space that's ruining my layout.

For your information, I didn't have this space on a backup of the document...

Could someone help me?????

Thanks in advance!!!!

Hello,
Given that I have a lot of footnotes in my Word documents, they take up space on my page, especially since often 2 or 3 words take up an entire line. I have long tried in every possible way to condense them, to stick them together, and I have only managed to do so by copying and pasting, but that changes the numbering. Does anyone know if it's possible to perform this operation, and how? Thank you
Matt

Hello everyone;
I have a problem regarding footnotes:
I inserted footnotes and the small line above the note is aligned to the left, which is normal
but the problem is that I write in Arabic and I align my footnotes to the right but the line always stays on the left
if someone can help me to get the line to the right, thank you very much.

I have the same problem, but reversed: the separator bar appears on the right (probably because my computer is set to Hebrew), but I write in French and I can't move it to the left. I did check the site suggested by another user, which helped me a lot with some things, but not with this point.
So if anyone has the solution, that would be great! Thank you!

Hello, I have the same problem. Only since I'm writing in French, the line of my footnotes appears on the right. How can I make it appear on the left? Please answer me.

Hi Matt,
If you're in "justified" (aligned left and right), try skipping a line at the end of your sentence. This way, Word won't right-align your last line by spacing out your words...

Hi Enzo,
Well, I'm not justified, but I still tried, it doesn't seem to be the solution…

Hello,

I have a problem: I would like to insert footnotes, but I can't access them in the dropdown menu ("view"). "Footnote" exists, but it is greyed out, so it's not usable.
I have the same problem with other applications (cut, paste, etc.).

Thank you very much.

Hello!

Does anyone know how to remove that separator line in Word 2007?
It's bothering me.

I found it, and people who cannot manipulate this feature must use the drop-down menu in the footnote window available in draft mode.

Great!

In Word 2011 (Mac):
1- View > Draft
2- View > Notes
3- At the bottom of the screen, the footnotes appear. You need to go to the drop-down menu and select "Footnote Separator." It will then display the line. You need to select it and delete it.

Hello everyone,

I'm using Office 2010 and I'm fairly proficient with Word, but I'm hitting a bit of a wall! A friend of mine, who is currently typing his thesis (final project), asked me how he could get a line that goes from one side of the page to the other for his footnote instead of the usual little line. After some tinkering, I wasn't able to change the length of that infamous line.
If anyone has an idea, or even better a solution... ;)

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I faced the same issue some time ago.
Unless I'm mistaken, Word uses a specific and recognized standard to manage the separator between text boxes and footnotes. It notably creates a different separator depending on whether the note is spread over two pages or not.
I would recommend letting it do its thing unless you are a sharp specialist in this area of Word.
That said, you would have done better to create a new topic rather than reviving an old one that is 4 years old and hardly relates...

For Word 2003, you can also go to Insert/Reference/Footnotes.

It wasn't worth disturbing you to come up with such a lame scoop 6 years late!
