Image quality - AVCHD (.MTS) to .AVI conversion???

Solved

Hello,

My camera records videos in AVCHD (format .MTS) and I would like to convert them to .AVI to be able to watch them on my PC.

I downloaded Free AVCHD Converter V.1.0, but when I convert my AVCHD videos (.MTS) I don't know what settings to use to ensure the image quality is good and the video quality is high.

I need to select the Preset, the format, the image size, the "Fps", the "video bitrate", and the "audio bitrate".

I have tried different presets and various image sizes, but the quality of my video remains really poor. The image is always pixelated, sometimes it "lags", and yet when I watch it on my camera in AVCHD, the image is excellent.

Does anyone have tips to help me? :)

Thanks,
Caroline

Hello,

Can you read your original files on your computer?
MTS or M2TS is synonymous with AVCHD videos, so you need a relatively powerful setup to play them.
The conversion to AVI (DivX/XviD) will necessarily compromise the visual "quality", while MP4 (H264/AVC) or MPEG-2 HD could be more appropriate.

I don't know your software, so could you indicate where you downloaded it, please? But perhaps it's the Free HD Converter from Koyote?

In that case, I would try MPEG-2 HD, which can be somewhat similar to HDV.
For the Size (resolution), either keep the original one, or lower it while maintaining the 16:9 ratio if that's the case, opting for something like 720x406 or others.
For the FPS (frames per second), it is recommended to keep the one from the original file, which might be 29.97, I don't know...
The same goes for the audio parameter, but at this level, we can't configure (we don't have the frequency, for example...) much with this software.
Anyway, even if this software has some qualities, it's not the one I would use, this opinion is just mine :/

Finally, try if you want with the software XMedia Recode (take the portable version if possible), or Freemake Video Converter which are quite easy to use and give fairly good results.

Best regards

No, my computer can't read the original files. That's why I want to convert them into a format that I can read on a PC.

And I do have Koyote's Free HD Converter, so I'll try all the advice you give me. Or at worst, I'll try with Freemake Video Converter.

Thanks, I'll keep you updated :)

Hello,

To clarify: .mts and .avi are container files that hold various audio/video formats.
Conversion is the process of transcoding an audio/video format (codec), so a container file cannot be converted.

Transcoding is destructive. This means there is more or less significant quality loss.

As friend ziggourat points out, with an AVCHD > HDV conversion or, I would add, AVCHD > DivX HD, the quality loss will be less.

A conversion should only be considered in particular situations (exporting to the Internet or certain devices).
You don't specify why you want to do a conversion, nor to which format.
If it's to convert to standard Mpeg2, the quality loss will be more considerable. Friend glandu is right to insist on the illogical aspect (why want to achieve mediocre quality when you have good quality?).

So before jumping into risky conversions, it's wiser to measure the consequences.

Best regards.

I want to convert it because my PC can't read HD camera files, and I want to be able to watch them on my PC.
I don't really know much about this, but according to some forums I've read, it seems that I should convert to MPEG or AVI if I want to watch it on my PC.

So thanks for the info, I'm trying out some things today :)

To be able to play HD content on your PC, you just need to ensure that your player (Windows Media Player, Moovida, VLC, or another) is a recent version that supports HD formats.
For Windows XP: Windows Media 11
For Windows 7: Windows Media 11 or 12

No, we do not convert Mpeg2 to AVI (Mpeg2 is a video format and AVI is a container file). AVI can contain Mpeg2.

By downloading a compatible player, you won't need to convert your video files to play them.

To help you better understand the video, see HERE

Good evening,

Actually, I'm trying to convert AVCHD to lighten it and upload it to the internet but it's still too big!!!

AVS Video Converter reduced it from 56MB to 16MB MP4 but it's still way too much for 2 minutes and 30 seconds!!!

Thank you for your help...

Hello, if you film in HD 1920x1080, it’s illogical to convert to anything else; you have to own up, meaning capture your film on basic or advanced video editing software as needed and finalize your film in mp4, mpeg2, whatever you prefer, knowing that a HD file compiled in mpeg2 1920x1080 at 23000kb/s bitrate is around 1GB for 5 minutes, there are no miracles.

HD camcorder and editing
Always provide us with the source of the video, the type of camera, otherwise the codec of the recording medium and your computer’s configuration.
Current "consumer" camcorders have opted for a format that is cumbersome for editing on small computer setups, the AVCHD (avc h264).
It is agreed to rely on a quad-core processor (like i5 7500k) on Seven 64bits to have more than 4GB of memory (two 4GB sticks), a large 7200rpm hard drive or a dedicated partition of the disk for video; I also recommend an 80GB SSD for the system and software.
The graphics card included in the processor (Sandy Bridge) is sufficient for editing and HD display; another graphics card is only useful in the case of heavy 3D gaming software.
A consumer editing software around €100 capable of editing with this essential codec and exporting in HD 1920 x1080; any other contortions will lead to headaches.

Please remember to mark "resolved" if that’s the case.

Yeah, I know I won't be able to work miracles, since HD quality will never be as good converted into another format. But since I can't play my original files on my PC, I'd rather lose a bit of quality and be able to watch them :)
Thanks for the info ... I'm trying a few tests this afternoon ....

Even if you can't currently visualize your files on your computer, I still suggest you keep them on an external hard drive, for example, so that you can, if you want, use them later with a more powerful computer ;)
It is indeed a shame to have files in AVCHD and then convert them, resulting in an unavoidable loss of quality.

After that, you can still try to perform the operation; the result may be watchable, but don't expect anything equivalent...

hi "zig" and yes, in the meantime it is indeed the best solution
especially since the new generation of scopes offers this possibility
(usually via an optional cable)

For you to move forward, Caro, it is essential that you can differentiate between a video format and a container file.
Mp4 is a container file that contains Mpeg4 Part 14
Mts (or m2ts) is a container file that contains Mpeg4 Part 10 (Mpeg4 AVC H264 = AVCHD)

Your camcorder does not record in Mp4, nor in Mts. Moreover, the recording format is AVCHD.

You need to install a compatible player on your PC to be able to read without issues (my message link 10

My response to pacalvidéo (SD recording) does not concern you.

What screen resolution do you convert with?
1
Caro.

In fact, I have a choice in the resolution list and there are about twenty options, so since I don't know about this, I don't know which resolution is the best...

I finally managed to convert my videos with the free HD Converter, and by playing a bit with the settings, I was able to achieve video quality that's not too bad. It's true that it's nothing compared to the HD version, but at least I can watch them on my PC with decent quality.

Thanks to you all for your advice! :)

ok "ziggourat" had the correct answer, you can give it a plus one on the side.

Essayez le programme de conversion AVCHD à AVI. Il prend en charge la conversion par lot sans perte de qualité. Vous pouvez consulter le tutoriel sur la façon de convertir MTS (AVCHD) en AVI.

while keeping the "master hd"
depending on the equipment you have, you have the option to get your movie in standard definition "sd"
simply through the A/V outputs of the scopes (sony jvc pana canon)
the principle is simple
there you go

I specify: it is possible to have the film in maximum HD quality, "recording," and to have it on the PC in SD quality
depending on the brands, it is either in a submenu of the device or on the provided CD; if this maneuver is not possible, it must be done through the A/V outputs.

Some camcorders allow recording in HD and SD.
The composite or S-Video output relates to SD recordings (SDT at Sony)
The camcorder does not perform HD (AVCHD or HDV) to SD (Mpeg2 standard) conversion.

Not knowing of any SONY camcorder capable of performing this conversion (HD recording, SD playback on PC via A/V output), could you at least specify one reference?

My camera allows me to record in AVCHD or MP4 only.
In MP4, I can view my videos on my PC, but not in AVCHD.
It's for a few videos that were recorded in AVCHD at the beginning when I got my camera that I would like to convert to view them on my PC. At that time, I didn't pay attention to the format :(
But nothing that says SD in my camera....

for Salva, the conversion is downward via the A/V,
however, I did forget to specify that the A/V must be connected to a capture box to go to the PC.

and of course go to the "menu" then the "submenu" to validate this operation
there it is clearer?
