Hello,
I have a digital camcorder and when I upload the videos to my PC, they are in AVCHD format.
The problem is that I can't use them (editing, uploading to Google or Facebook, Windows Movie Maker, etc.).
Do you know of any free software that can convert AVCHD videos to AVI or MPEG-4, in short, a more common format???
Thank you
Configuration: Windows 7 / Internet Explorer 7.0

If you want, here's an ultra-simple and free software:
https://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/encodeurs_et_decodeurs/fiches/49949.html
Don't accept the installation of the Yahoo toolbar to avoid unwanted ads on your PC
It's very easy to use ^^ (My grandpa could use it!!).

I just tested the Nin_mania link:
https://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/encodeurs_et_decodeurs/fiches/49949.html
Actually, it seems quite suitable for my case, right?
On the other hand, "set the size, the number of frames per second, and the audio and video quality," I don't understand any of that at all.
Adjusting settings isn't for clumsy beginners like me, I think.
Video isn't really my cup of tea; I shouldn't have overthought it and just gotten a camcorder (maybe not as good) that's not HD... Ugh.
I wanted to spend some money and get decent stuff, brand new for once, but I should have refrained!

Seriously, I can't take this struggle anymore.
Plus, just imagine if I find the trick I need (I've already tested dozens and installed dozens of freeware software since yesterday, but nothing works EASILY.
I don't want to redo these 1000 manipulations for each file every time I go to film my kids playing soccer or sliding on a slide!
LOL
Right now I'm in the middle of a conversion test on Free HD Converter v.1.7 recommended by Nin_mania.
It's at ..... (suspense) ......... "0%"
Yayyyyy!
(Well, I don't care if it takes 2 hours per movie, it's already better than 2 days, right?
:-P

So...
... I tested the outcome of the software tonight, and it works with Gom Player, so I'm testing it with the others, and:
=>
With Windows Movie Maker: still no sound, but the image appears smooth.
If there was that damn SOUND, I would have already finished the work 24 hours ago (last night), and I wouldn't be tearing my hair out!
The editing I have to do is super simple on WMM, and the "zoom" feature is really handy (no zoom on the software that came with my FullHD camera, top-notch, which drives me crazy... damn high-tech CRAP!)
=>
For VLC, the image plays smoothly throughout the video, perfect (whereas with my previous attempts, it froze at the 2-second mark and stayed stuck until the end, and still no sound.
Still no sound here either.
Grrrrr
=>
And on Windows Media Player: MAGNIFICENT, IT WORKS!!!
I have sound and image, with no delay, perfect!!
... But then, if Windows Media Player can play it, why doesn't Windows Movie Maker give me that damn SOUND?????????
(Wouldn't Windows products be compatible with each other? I would be surprised, they aren't beta versions after all!)

2nd test, after trying to convert to .mpg with Free HD Converter, I'm trying .avi while correctly setting 1920 x 1080 in "size", but I don't know what to put for "FPS", "video Bitrate", and "Audio Bitrate" as values.
So for .avi, it gives
=>
For VLC, GOM Player, and Windows Media Player: The picture works, the sound works, but it's pixelated.
The picture looks really UGLY, especially knowing it's originally a FullHD camera!!!!
LMAO
;-)
=>
In Windows Movie Maker: No sound, no image, and big exclamation points in every interval/sequence of the video, in the workspace.
(For .avi, supposedly "universal", that's strange, isn't it?)
... But then, if Windows Media Player can play it, why can't Windows Movie Maker let me WORK on the video?????????
And why is the picture so ugly when with Free HD Converter you can choose between 3 quality options for .avi, and I chose the best (high quality)?????????

Great tutorial ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv53sS7ddAo )!
Thanks!
I’m taking it step by step, so ... what’s the software you opened in the first few seconds?
When I make the video full screen, I read “Xvid ...”? I can’t see well
<quote>movie maker opens mp4, mkv, mpegts h264(m2ts converted to ts with ts muxer) and I could go on

</quote>
Um .... What is all that?
(Yes, I’m blonde and annoying, sorry ...)
Thanks!

"I'm taking it step by step, so ... what’s the software you opened in the first few seconds?

And further along, before opening Virtual Dub, what’s the icon with an M on a green background?"
The first software is MediaInfo, which gives you information about your video file.
The second one is XMedia Recode, it will open your video, there is a specific profile
for YouTube, you select it, then it encodes in MP4 with very good quality.
Surely, depending on your PC, the encoding may be slow, that's mostly what's holding you back.
But there's nothing you can do about it, the rest is just manipulation, another way to do it.
Good luck!

Ok, well I responded to you on the other topic.
And I will give the continuation of my test tonight (currently being converted to .wmv (to change it up, lol) on the other post as well.
The steps you're describing to encode in mp4, I’m copying them into a text file to test right after, if my test doesn’t work (it’s not possible to edit them clearly on WMM)
See you later on the other side
;-)

why can't you use it? we can compress them but if you're working on a laptop
it's not recommended, and on a low-powered machine, processing takes a long time

(if it’s for the department, 62, I’m from 59! LOL)
We can work on this without having a beast of a PC, right?
I’m in trouble because I keep trying this and that, and it keeps making copies in 1000 different formats of those 3 crappy videos I made yesterday... and I’m getting nowhere throughout all my blunders, and then, on YouTube, it works... ¨Pfffff!
The topic I started to explain all the mess: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-21839473-aidez-moi-a-modifier-mes-videos-hd-et-mpeg2
Since AVCHD is not compatible with most popular portable devices, players or editing software, including Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker, PlayStation, Xbox, etc., people must convert AVCHD to other video formats for playback.

It also helps to convert AVCHD to MP4, MOV, FLV, WMV, MKV, etc.
