Hello,
I apologize in advance for the redundancy of this type of error, but I haven't found any solution that works for me. I'm also sorry if I'm in the wrong topic ;)
Last week, when I turned on my PC, I got this error message (white text on a black background):
a disk read error occurred
press ctrl+alt+del to restart
I followed the instructions, but the same message still appears.
I then went into the BIOS at startup, and in the boot priorities, my hard drive is in 2nd position (CD/DVD drive is in 1st position).
So I moved it to the top of the list, but the error keeps coming back, and upon returning to the BIOS, the hard drive is again in 2nd position.
I then removed my hard drive, connected it externally to another PC running Windows, and I also tested it on a Mac: I can only see one of the two partitions (I see the drive: D but not the: C).
However, I mainly wanted to back up my data that was on the: C...
What do you think? Do you believe that my drive: C is dead (and not the: D)? ...
Thank you for your help!
(My PC is just 4 years old, I know it's at the end of its life but still... It originally had Vista installed and I upgraded it to Seven a year and a half ago).
Thank you :)
Configuration: Windows Vista / Safari 536.5

Hello
So I assume that CHKDSK didn’t work and you want to proceed with formatting.
First of all, please note that even after a formatting (normal, not low-level which is exceptional and requires other software and hassle), you can recover what’s on the hard drive.
Here’s my advice:
1/ You should not install anything after the formatting to be able to recover your data. So using a Windows DVD is not really recommended since a system installation is done right after.
2/ If you have another PC, remove your hard drive and connect it to the other PC.
3/ It will appear in Explorer (Start --< Computer)
4/ Right-click on it and format
5/ Do not choose quick format, so that the bad sectors can be repaired.
6/ Now use Easy Recovery again and recover your data.
See you later.

Can I format the damaged HDD simply by connecting it externally, or do I have to put it internally in another PC?
I now have a loaned computer, and I’d rather not change the hard drive for fear of making a mistake; I have a high deposit check...
Thank you.
