Word issue changing the levels of styles

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble making the modification:
-Either the heading style 1 is already selected in my text, and in this case, the level modification appears grayed out and is not accessible
-Or I change the heading styles to no longer have heading style 1 assigned in the text. In this case, I can change the level, but... the modification is not saved: heading 1 remains level 1, even after clicking "OK"!
It's a bit frustrating. Am I doing something wrong or are the predefined styles in Word 2007 somehow protected?

Hello
Word has its default heading styles organized with a logic
Heading 1 level 1 comes before heading 2 level 2, and so on...
When you add heading styles, Word automatically promotes the heading style to the next level
I don't understand your problem... There's nothing stopping you from creating your styles with your levels...

My message wasn't very clear, as I wanted to post it in reply to a previous message (Post by Ipnotik in Feb 2010). Sorry!
Actually, here is my problem: I have defined my main titles with the "Title" style and I want them to be displayed in an automatic table of contents (to create a master document and sub-documents afterwards). In this case, only my titles 1, 2, and 3 appear in the table of contents and not those with the "title" style, which is considered the lowest hierarchical level (body text)!
Here’s what Ipnotik advised us:
To change the hierarchical level of your titles, here’s how to do it:
1) Right-click on the style of your choice, then on "Modify"

2) In the bottom right of the window that opens, click on "Format", then on "Paragraph"

3) In "Hierarchical Level", select the desired level

Warning: If you modify the "Title" style to level 1, you must redefine "Title 1" to level 2, etc. ...
Once all your styles are modified, you can generate an automatic table of contents (References tab > table of contents)

Hi,
The standalone Title style is not meant to be included in a table of contents. You can use it for the title of your work.
For titles to be included in the table of contents, start with the Title 1 style... up to Title 9
and everything will be easier :)

Hello,
Indeed, we do not change the hierarchical level of the titles.
However, you can apply the level 1 to the title style. It is not a problem to have multiple styles (here Title and Title 1) with a level 1.
