2 different styles in a paragraph with Word 2007

Hello everyone!
I've been struggling with WORD 2007 for an hour now, and despite my numerous searches online, I'm still without answers... :(

I'm writing a law thesis where I need to include "hanging titles."

So, each paragraph should look like this:

1. Introductory remarks.- At the time of competition between legal systems.... 40% of international contracts contain ...blaaaaaaaaaaaaablabbbbbbbbbbbbblaaaaaaaaaa.

I want only the first sentence following my numbering (I've created a list style for my paragraphs so that the numbers follow automatically) to be in italics and bold like my numbering, and the rest of the paragraph to be normal (without italics or bold).

So I would like to create a list style that allows me with one click to assign 2 styles to a paragraph.

If anyone has an idea, it would really save my life...

Configuration: Windows Vista / Firefox 9.0.1

Hello

If these are titles that need to go into the table of contents, it's still best to use the heading styles that are specifically designed for that. You can apply italics, bold, and whatever else you want.
Then you assign a hierarchical numbering to your heading style and save everything as a new set of styles.

When using it:
- you select Heading 1, you enter your heading text
- you insert a style separator: Ctrl+Alt+Enter
- you type your paragraph text (which should automatically be in normal style because Heading 1 is followed by default by Normal style).

Dear m@rina,
Thank you for your response, but unfortunately, these are not titles to be included in the table of contents (ha ha, that would have been too easy!), but your idea is excellent. These are all the normal paragraphs (body text) of my thesis. Therefore, they cannot appear as titles. However, they are numbered for reference and indexing purposes.

My question remains, how can I ensure that the first sentence of each paragraph is automatically formatted (by applying a style let's say "normal thesis" to my paragraph) in a certain style (bold + italic) (this is called "pulled titles") and the rest in normal font, not bold or italic...?

Thank you for helping me find a solution!!

Hello,

Thank you for reading my answer all the way to the end, which contains the answer.

And above all, your solution forces me to format each paragraph... By giving it a title and a style separator (might as well bold/italicize the first sentence of each of my 1500 paragraphs by hand! ;)

If the 1500 paragraphs are already written, I think you're a bit late to the game. When creating a large document, there are many things to consider before diving into a blank page.

If the document isn't typed up yet, I don't understand what you want... To get two different styles in the same paragraph, there's the style separator that fully answers your question... and everything will be automatic without needing, as you said, to switch from bold/italic to normal text and vice versa.
Now, if this solution doesn't please you, I'm not going to reinvent Word... Moreover, the term "poured style" doesn't mean anything...

Anyway, I don't really like being looked down upon as you are doing... The "ha ha that would have been too easy!" was too much, especially since there's no difference in usage, whether it's a title style or any other style.

M@rina,

Sorry if I upset you, that wasn’t my intention! I think I was just trying to be funny (failed then...:( !)

The paragraphs are already written. A style has already been assigned to format them all in the same way because I didn’t know that I needed to create “hanging titles” before writing them; otherwise, I could have applied your solution, I think.
Hence my problem! “Hanging title” is the term used by my thesis supervisors and colleagues (it’s not a Word or computer term, indeed); it just refers to highlighting the first sentence of each paragraph in bold in a research paper, as far as I understand.
So, using titles would force me to style my entire document (which is not the goal, we agree)
And every time I use the style separator (ALT CTRL ENTER) on two styles and then define a new style name for the paragraph containing both styles, one of the two styles takes precedence over the other...:( even having used the style jump...

Thank you again for your help, I will continue to try to find a solution that allows me to automatically bold the first sentence of each paragraph.

Best regards.

Cécile.
