PROBLEM: My USB mouse is not recognized anymore.

Hello,

I'm contacting you about a problem that's been driving me crazy since the weekend... it's making me want to pull my hair out!

As a side note, on Saturday afternoon, while I was quietly playing a game on my HP laptop using a USB gamepad, I stepped away for a few seconds. When I returned to my screen, I noticed that the controller no longer worked in the game. Going back to the desktop, I also noticed that my Logitech USB mouse had stopped responding!!
I thought it was strange but not dramatic. However, from that point on, it was impossible to get VISTA to recognize the mouse and gamepad (message: UNKNOWN USB DEVICE), and I noticed that one of my 4 ports is completely unresponsive (it doesn't even show UNKNOWN USB DEVICE).
So, I decided to reinstall the USB controller drivers in the device manager and restarted, but nothing worked – same story, and I even got a blue screen (BSOD) that said: BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER
STOP: 0x000000FE, etc. (I took a picture just in case).
I restored Windows to a previous restore point (before Saturday because I noticed that Windows Update had installed a driver update for the USB controllers), but still nothing.
I went for the ultimate step, which was reinstalling Windows VISTA + factory settings of the pc, and to my despair, the same problem persisted (I even got a new blue screen BUGCODE USB DRIVER after a restart during the Windows reinstallation). Another notable issue is that my pc sometimes hangs instantly on startup with a black screen and a frozen white line in the upper left corner).

So, to sum up: 1 USB port that doesn't detect or recognize any devices, 3 other ports that detect but don't recognize my mouse and gamepad but do recognize my external hard drive and other devices (those that weren't plugged in when the problem occurred).

So, I've looked a bit online about this USB DRIVER message but apparently not many solutions. I was wondering if it was still due to a VISTA patch that messed everything up (are there other reports?). I reinstalled the controller drivers and tried rolling back to previous versions but without success.
So I've reached a point where I don't know what else to do to resolve this except call HP technical support or hope to come across someone who knows how to fix the issue.
If I can get another mouse to test, I will do that this week to see.

If anyone could shed some light on this problem, I'd appreciate it in advance ;)
Configuration: Windows Vista Firefox 3.0.7

Uh, it might be a bit late, but I had the exact same problem! I just plugged in another mouse that was lying at the back of a drawer, and it installed a new driver for that mouse! Then I reconnected my mouse that wasn't working! And magic! It worked perfectly! There you go! Hoping this helps you!

Hello everyone,
I had the same problem with my HP laptop; it no longer recognized the mouse. I tried all the possible manipulations just like our friend up there. I even changed the mouse, but nothing worked; no mouse was functioning, yet the storage devices would sometimes work and sometimes not. Then ....... I thought of something: I turned off my laptop, disconnected the battery, and restarted it only on mains power,... and then ... Eureka!!!! The mouse started working again, even after reconnecting the battery.
Conclusion: the problem was due to a parasitic circuit caused by a cell phone plugged into my laptop for charging.
There you go, I hope this helps some of you solve your mouse problems!!!!
