Windows XP slow on Acer One 110

Solved

Hello,
here is my problem: I have an Acer Aspire One A110 but the original Linux annoyed me so I removed it. Its replacement was Windows XP Home, but I was a bit surprised by the slowness. I then decided to switch to Linux, which is not easy but feasible. However, even with Wine, Windows applications are poorly executed and movies cannot be played in full screen.
So I reinstalled Windows, but this time Windows XP Professional, but the slowness is the same.
Is there a solution to my problem?
Moreover, I know where the problem comes from: the SSD is crappy and has a low throughput. I decided to take a closer look, and the SSD is a Toshiba, and actually it is very small, which means I cannot replace it with a 2.5 inches one. Even if I wanted the drive to come out underneath, it is impossible because the ribbon cable is very strange and small.
This slowness is not really annoying, but it runs like a computer that only has 128 MB of RAM and a Pentium 3, while this computer is equipped with an Intel Atom dual-core processor.
Thank you for your responses.
Configuration: Windows Seven beta Firefox 2.0.0.20

Hello gentlemen,

I have an Aspire One 16 Go XP that is natively very slow.
I downloaded a driver for Windows XP which is a Flashpoint b3 driver that you can find at the following address: http://zflashpoint.blogspot.com/

You'll see, it's like night and day.

Hoping to have helped you.

Hi, a thorough cleanup is needed; this site https://thefastcomputer.com/speed-up-acer/
explains why to do it and how to proceed in order to truly lighten your Acer computer.

on eBay or the Docase sites, but you have to search for laptops that have an HDD like the Acer One A150, and there you should find 120GB or other ultra-portable models like the EE PCs.

A 20GB would be enough for me. Can you give me the reference of yours because 1.8" ones are rare, especially those that easily fit on the ZIF Napa.
Have you tried the "file based write filter" to optimize XP with the SSD before?
Thanks for the information ;o)

Personally, when I bought the A110 (8GB flash memory + 8GB SD, XP Home), I immediately formatted it to NTFS... and then the catastrophe.
First, the SSD is slow and on top of that, I experience freezes 30% of the time (10 seconds to open an explorer).
The solution: format to FAT32, XP Pro + stopping disk access (everything on the RAM), and now it's pure joy, I am smooth (and yet I only have 512MB of RAM with 128MB allocated to swap).

Hi Francis, I also have an Acer Aspire and I've often wanted to throw it against a wall because it's so slow. It's running XP, and I would like to know please how to do what you did: format to FAT 32, XP Pro + stop access to the hard drive (everything on the RAM).
I would like to have a computer as smooth as yours, thanks!

Hello, I just acquired an Acer Aspire One 110aw and I haven't found online the means to stop access to the hard drive as you mentioned in your post. Could you please indicate the steps to follow to carry out this manipulation? Thank you.

hi everyone

Since I downloaded this patch, I no longer have user profile recognition

I'm going to reboot XP, see what happens (if everything works like on the first day) and then reapply the patch and see what happens

I'll keep you posted

See you!

Here is a link to a manufacturer offering faster SSD hard drives as a replacement for the original one,
here is the link regarding the Acer Aspire One A110:

Format in Fat, and the Acer One does not have a dual core... I also installed XP on the very first day... but what slowness, wow lol but I had formatted in NTFS...
Right now I'm downloading Windows LSD, I'm waiting for it to finish downloading and I'll install it; I'll keep you updated.

spliffercrash:
the Acer One does have a dual-core, go to the task manager and you'll see. Well, okay, it's not really a dual-core but it's better than a Celeron 1.6GHz and I formatted it to FAT because I read a lot of forums talking about it, so that's not the issue.
otherwise I found a great site that offers a program for Windows XP that simulates Vista Aero with the Acer screen, it looks amazing

Hello,
I also installed XP Pro, and it's a bit slow; I added 1GB of RAM, but it's coming from the SSD drive.
Does anyone have an option to suggest..??
I can't seem to get LSD on my USB stick.. to be faster than XP Pro.

J'ai trouvé la solution, il faut virer le SSD. J'ai opté pour un HDD Samsung de 20 Go qui fonctionne à merveille, plus de bugs, et j'ai ajouté 1 Go de RAM aussi.

hello,

Good...
Where did you find your 20GB HDD... that's rare.
I have one at home recovered from a portable player.. but it's a micro ATA not ZIF...
There is an adapter the other way around... not in this one..
So a place where you got your HDD would make me happy.
I'm giving up on transforming my micro ATA into ZIF....
If you have a place that's not too expensive otherwise it's more of a netbook ;o)

I just bought an ASPIRE ONE 16Go XP and I'm hesitant to launch this FLASHPOINT patch...

No issues? Which version did you install? They are at beta version 6

You lost your user profile, what does that mean?

Hi

So I installed version 6 of the patch

From what I've noticed, this patch deletes backups on the SSD
so profiles, documents, in fact everything I could put on the PC, it doesn't write it on drive C

I had to reformat and reinstall XP to resolve the issue.

Now, I don't dare install this patch again.

I'm waiting for others to give their opinion

Talk soon

Are you saying that you lost all your personal files (like Excel, Word, photos) by installing this thing??????
0
bill57

exactly

as he couldn't load my profile, I ended up with a guest profile. So no backup

that's why I'm really hesitant to reinstall it

I don't get it: on the forum dedicated to the Aspire One, no one has encountered your problem....

Have your photo, Excel files, etc. been deleted from your hard drive??????

no, it was always there but I didn't have access to it because Windows opened a guest session.

Fortunately, there wasn't much there. It's my daughter's PC and apart from MSN and a few documents, there wasn't anything very important.

All I can say is that this patch removes or modifies certain Windows features. Including the one for backing up profiles with all the documents.

So, the only thing I can say is that apart from a complete reinstall, I wasn't going to manage.

a priori impossible d'avoir plusieurs profils utilisateurs avec ce patch donc.

Hoping this is the only bug.

Hello,
I also bought an Acer One SSD version. After various attempts, I decided to replace the SSD with a mechanical drive. I started a little site with explanations on how to dismantle the PC and change the SSD, the problems encountered...

Coming in about a week: TUTORIAL to add Bluetooth (for the DIYers...) and activate the second mini PCI-e port of the Acer One.

Since I made this modification, I am delighted with my purchase, no more freezing... I can even run CATIA on it :) (screen a bit small for this use --> just a simple challenge..)

Good evening,

Hello,
how do I activate the second mini PCI-e port on the Acer One?
I have an A110-BW (with 3G) and I replaced the 3G module with an SSD, but it is not detected by the BIOS :-(

Why buy a netbook running Linux if you want to work under XP? Plus, if we factor in the purchase of a RAM stick, a 20GB disk, and the Windows license, you could have gotten a better-performing laptop with Windows XP OEM installed and everything legal. Furthermore, I see you're violating all Microsoft licenses with your Win LSD.

Moreover, I don't see what Windows would bring you on a netbook. Just slowness and viruses. You can't play games on a netbook; 3D is not supported. And for multimedia, everything works perfectly fine on Linux, even full-screen video!

It's just a big laziness to learn how to use software, when it's really not that hard.

I've also used Windows since version 3.1, going through 95, 98, NT, XP, and Vista. I have my Windows habits, but with a few hours of reading, I can handle Linux like a pro and my Acer Aspire One runs like a racehorse since I installed Ubuntu Jaunty Netbook Remix. Mine came with XP at purchase, it's night and day in terms of responsiveness. And it's not Linux that limits my capabilities but the netbook itself, which doesn't have a graphics card.

Yes, I agree with you, but the problem is that, to my knowledge, you can't install a 3G dongle (SFR, Orange, Bouygues, Auchan, etc.) on a netbook because the 3G dongle doesn't have Linux drivers. So, I'm taking the example of someone who frequently takes the train with their 3G dongle and XP; they can surf during the trip with Linux, they can't anymore... unless it's possible, but then I would like to know how :D

That's why I switched to XP even though, in return, the netbook is slower.

Hello,
Personally, I'm surprised by the graphics card in the Acer One, and I'm not disappointed. It's true that you can't play Call of Duty or Far Cry on it, but it is still an Intel 945 Express Chipset Family with 224M of shared memory.

A netbook isn't really made for gaming; indeed, the screen size and small keyboard aren't suitable. However, if some want to pass the time on a plane or a train, some games work very well: Hitman 1, 2, and 3, Age of Empires 2, New York Race, and even Lemmings :)

As for Linux, it all depends on what you want to do with the PC. In my case, Linux limits me too much... But it's clear that Linux + Acer One works great, fast, reliable...

See you soon!
