Windows XP stuck on "Welcome"

Hello,
For about a month, Windows XP (Home Edition) has been stuck on the Welcome screen. After not finding any solutions to this issue, I reinstalled the OS. It worked for a day, then the same problem happened the next day. I formatted the disk, reinstalled, and the same issue occurred the day after the reinstallation. It’s not due to the RAM (512 MB), as I ran a MemTest, and my hard drive is fine because Ubuntu has been installing and running without any problems for a month...
Yesterday, I gave it another shot: everything was going great until this morning when it froze..
Where is the problem coming from? What should be done?

Indeed, it is indeed a driver that prevents Windows from starting, namely my graphics card driver (GeForce 6600 LE). I therefore disabled it via the device manager, then installed the latest version of the driver. Everything was working fine yesterday. However, today when I turn it on, the driver still blocks Windows, even though it is up to date. As a result, Windows starts and works well, but without the graphics card driver, which is still quite inconvenient...

First, can you start in safe mode or do you have the problem there too?
Do you have a lot of extra hardware connected to the computer, like a printer, scanner, card reader, USB webcam...?
Is your keyboard/mouse USB or PS2?
Is it a desktop or a laptop?

In your case, the failure is certainly of hardware origin. Perform a hardware check on your machine using a boot CD like Ultimate Boot CD (https://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche11951-ultimate-boot-cd.html) to verify its condition.

@ben69: Safe mode works well, but I don't know what to do in it.. Otherwise, it's a desktop PC, with a PS2 keyboard and mouse, and with no powered peripherals at startup (only a turned-off printer because drivers are not installed for now, so unusable..).

Go to Start, Run, type "msconfig", under the BOOT tab, uncheck everything in there one by one, restart each time and see if it works.

After unchecking the "unnecessary" programs for a good startup (iTunes, Avast!, Zone Alarm..) and then unchecking the others one by one, and ultimately unchecking everything, the result is the same.
I've noticed that the hard drive stops "searching" when it freezes, whereas before this problem occurred, it made noise until it loaded the desktop. So I think it's missing a necessary file for its startup, and yet I've reinstalled it several times...

In fact, when I reinstall XP, I always install the default driver from the CD, and then I do the updates. I just did the update proposed by Windows Update (dated July 10) and then the one proposed by TouslesDrivers.com (dated 10/16/10). Both of them work at first, even after several restarts, but the next day, it won't start each time. I have to disable the driver in safe mode to be able to use Windows...

well, the problem was solved by reinstalling XP for the umpteenth time and going step by step to see where the issue came from. Only this time, everything works, so I can't tell you how I resolved the problem, except by reinstalling Windows…
