GTA IV fatal error Solved

Question

Hello,
I have GTA IV on PC, the installation goes smoothly but when the game starts (the game, not the social club), it goes fullscreen for half a second and I get the following error message:
"GTA IV Fatal Error: DD3D50".
Looking it up online, I read that the DD3D50 error indicates that DirectX 9 is not supported by the graphics card, however, I have several games that run with DirectX 9 and work fine, and dxdiag clearly states that I have DirectX 9.
How can I "specify" to my PC that I am indeed using DirectX 9 so that I can finally play?

The problem has been resolved for a year and a half now!
To summarize one last time for those who still don't understand: The DD3D50 error simply indicates that YOUR GRAPHICS CARD IS NOT COMPATIBLE, end of story. The only solution is to CHANGE IT, there’s no need to scream every month asking what to do!

I now consider this issue resolved, for any further complaints, create your own post.

Yes, it's true, DirectX 10 is not compatible with XP.
Unfortunately, your issue is well-known; the game GTA IV has significant problems...

Yes, but GTA IV requires DirectX 9. If I install DirectX 10, won't it cause issues for games that run on DirectX 9?

Yes, I know there are loads of problems; I'm currently on a forum dedicated to GTA and there are many posts from players reporting bugs... it's just that I'm fed up; I have this game constantly in front of my PC taunting me ^^
Well, I just have to wait for Rockstar to wake up and release a patch to fix it ^^

Yes, I consulted a professional and the bug is due to the video card not supporting the requested version of DirectX 9 (there are several versions, the most recent one dating from early November).
So I advise you to change your graphics card.
For your information, get something solid like a 1GB video card so you’ll be good for a while ^^

I installed GTA 4, I launch it, it works! I'm playing, everything is fine and then at some point the game stops and shows me: "GRAPHICS CARD FULL, PLEASE RESTART THE SYSTEM." Ça y est, j'ai réussi à rejouer et là ça marche impeccable ! J'adore ce jeu ! Beaucoup pensent que ce jeu est nul à chier mais moi je le trouve réussi, pour moi c'est LE jeu de l'année (à part ma carte graphique assez faible mais je peux jouer 1h après ça coupe et je relance, ça marche, je joue, ça recoupe, je relance, je rejoue et ainsi de suite et j'avance assez vite dans le jeu). La qualité graphique n'est pas si mal pour un PC MAIS les lags sont souvent présents et ralentissent le jeu. Bon ben voilà, pour moi c'est un très bon jeu.

The error DD3D50 indicates that the graphics card does not support the requested version of DirectX 9. Indeed, there are several versions of DirectX 9, the most recent one dates back to November 2008. It is possible that your card supports DirectX 9, but perhaps it does not support the November update of DirectX.  So clearly, the only solution is to change the graphics card to a more powerful one; I recommend a minimum of 512 MB, 1 GB would be best.

Yes, but your problem was the error DD3D50? There are plenty of errors like that. You need to find a way to make the PC believe that the shader model is version 3.

Well, my problem is this: I uninstalled GTA 4 and normally registered for Social Club and Games for Windows Live. At first, when I wasn't registered yet, it showed me the fatal error GTA IV DD3D50, and now that I've registered, it shows me this long message: Fatal error of GTA IV: Error d3d-shader model 3.0 or newer is required. Well, the problem isn't DirectX 9 or 10, they're both installed. The issue is that you have the game GTA 4 installed incorrectly on your computer. Eject the CD, remove everything related to GTA from your computer, then reinstall it. After that, set the compatibility mode to Windows 2000, and that's it. No need for SP1, SP2, SP3, or DirectX nonsense, okay? Because WINDOWS 2000 just requires you to play, that's all.

If the game still won’t start afterwards. Update Direct X, Windows .NET Framework, and consider installing Service Pack 3. Update the drivers for Internet Explorer and Adobe Flash (if already done) go to your CD folder, then run setup.exe, and select repair.

Well, I'll summarize one last time for everyone who has the DD3D50 error:
If you have updated GTA IV, the error message is more precise: it is not directx that is the cause, it is Shader Model that is causing the problem.
GTA IV requires Shader Model 3.0 minimum, and your cards are likely at 2.0, which explains this error.
You cannot update Shader Model, you absolutely need to change the graphics card.
Personally, I changed my PC 6 months ago and GTA is now working wonderfully, I'm closing the topic!

Hello everyone,  I also installed the GTA 4 live game on my computer, bought in a store. The social club worked, then I clicked on play and it says FATAL ERROR: DD3D50. That's when I downloaded the game patch from the Rockstar website. I try to play again and now it says, FATAL ERROR: shader model 3.0 or higher required. I just acquired a game called Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, and after installing the 2 CDs, an error message appears when I click on the PLAY tab.
