Hello,
Since this morning my Intel Core Duo iMac refuses to go to sleep; as soon as it does, it restarts immediately. Just yesterday everything was fine, and the only change it had was a Safari update. Could this be the cause? What should I do? Thank you for responding. Best regards.

Good evening, well there has been a change since this morning; since I didn't understand everything in your response I turned everything off and waited 2 hours before turning it back on and then I put it to sleep and it worked the first time; I did it several times successfully! So you are surely right somewhere but where? I am unable to find it; but the main thing is that it works; we'll see tomorrow, one day at a time...
A big thank you to all of you who responded, @++

Hello,
A possible interpretation...
System preferences have, like all applications on our Macs, one or more preference files that track, as the system operates, the settings we impose, the modifications made by the system, etc... Sometimes these files get corrupted and cause software malfunctions.
I resolved a case similar to Tita-co's by trashing the system preferences and restarting. Tita-co didn't need that; the simple restart was probably enough because, by launching System Preferences, it cleaned up its prefs.
Best regards.
PS 1: ...and a little permissions repair after installing Safari probably wouldn't have hurt.
PS 2: I know, I seem a bit obsessed, throughout my posts, by preference issues, but I've seen so many "serious problems" resolved by trashing these files that I hope you'll forgive me ;-)

I had the same problem, I could no longer put my iMac to sleep, it would instantly wake up, even when starting from an external drive, which made me think it was a hardware defect. Then I downloaded Avast, which found 5 infections, and everything went back to normal.
The moral of the story is that Macs are not as invulnerable to viruses anymore. I hope my response, years after the original topic, will help some who are just as desperate as I was, as I even considered changing my 8-year-old Mac... In the end, I might just upgrade it to an SSD.

it’s nice of you to come to my rescue, but this time there’s no miracle alas, nothing to do I’ve read everything and applied it in reverse and still nothing! I’ve always worked with Apple/Mac without a single problem and since I’ve had this iMac it hasn’t stopped; don’t worry Photobooth is still working; anyway the problem remains unsolved and it’s not too serious I’m just going to log off that’s all! Thanks and @+++
If you are absolutely certain about all the settings in the System Preferences / Energy Saver and the applications that might be running in the background, you can try to see if a background task is running that isn't visible.
I encountered a similar issue; My Mac would never go to sleep, even though all the settings were fine, and the culprit was "HP ScanManager," an application or rather a "Daemon" that was running in the background, waiting for someone to press a button on the HP scanner. Since I always used this scanner from the computer, I had absolutely no need for this daemon that "manages" the dialogue between the buttons on the scanner and the Mac.
I discovered this culprit by opening "Activity Monitor," which can be found in Applications / Utilities..
When no application was apparently running, there was actually this application that was running and keeping the system active.
I located the culprit file, lodged in one of the "Startup Items" folders, then deleted this file and everything became fine.
You may have a similar problem ?? worth checking anyway..
Best regards
