Screen goes to sleep on its own.

Hello everyone,

The screen sleep issue can, as always, come from several possible causes... (and no one is necessarily in the same situation...)

AND as often, we need to distinguish between Software or Hardware as the source of the problem.

For the "Hardware" causes, there are a few clues to get on the right track... So:

1. The issue occurs randomly, at any time.

2. Restarting the PC does not remove the sleep mode.

3. The screen light turns orange. (= so it's definitely a screen sleep mode, unlike a black screen but with the light still green, there can sometimes be confusion). The orange light can only occur after a real power outage.

4. Windows also seems to restart afterwards...

For the "Software" causes, there are also a few clues to get on the right track... So:

1. Follows the installation of a software.

2. Follows fiddling with the display settings, particularly of the graphics card, or less easily identifiable, the power options... (even at the BIOS level)

3. Always follows fiddling with DirectX (or following the installation of a game reinstalling DirectX)

4. Always follows the same use of a software. (there, it's obvious!)

5. Follows a change of graphics card.

THE solutions to consider:

Hardware Cause

1. Overheating of the graphics card, which causes the memory to "fail". Normally, after cooling down it should come back for a while before happening again. In this case, check the CPU temperature, or other indicator gauge (managed by BIOS)

2. Same idea as above, but more serious! ONE or MORE faulty capacitors due to still excessive temperature rise. In this case, visually check if you see a swollen capacitor on the graphics card (or on the motherboard). Be careful, sometimes the swelling occurs not on the top of the capacitor but on the bottom, and it's less noticeable at first glance...

2bis. Check the temperature inside the case. If it is excessive, it can cause the RAM to "fail". A simple way to see this is in the BIOS. You can also leave the case open to see if that temporarily helps... Then implement a cooling solution...

3. IF Windows also seems to have "failed"... There, plenty of other causes could be at play... So I won’t go into detail... (otherwise we need a real flowchart...)

4. If the screen had a period where it changed to a monochrome color... Check the cable between the screen and the PC. (Bad contact in the cable wires)

5. If the screen (CRT) had a period where the image was reduced in height or width, without being able to resize it... It means the screen is now ready for the trash...

6. If the graphics card is very recent, on an old screen... It is possible that the card frequency is too high... It’s mainly a settings issue...

6bis. If the graphics card is only very recent, then the uninstallation of the old card (at the software level) was not done before installing the new one. In some new graphics card installations, some settings retain the old values... Hence the bug...

7. Many people who bought the same card have issues! No, I'm not joking! I’ve seen it on CCM! And the problem was... the manufacturing! (but this remains quite rare...)

Hi, my problem is that my screen goes to sleep by itself, the light is orange and it says no video input detected, but I can hear that my computer is still running.

for this problem I found the solution for Vista:
- Control Panel.
- Power Options (logo: a battery with a cable)
- on the left you look for: "change the conditions for putting the computer to sleep"
- change advanced power settings
- you look for "power button and lid"
- then you click on modify and set it to "never"

I don't understand why this issue hasn't been resolved for all these years? pff

This kind of problem happens sometimes, so I’m going to give you some basic rules; it’s up to you to follow them step by step:

1 Check the connection via the cable between your screen and the graphics card.
2 Check the power cable of your screen between the screen and the socket.
3 Check your power supply; maybe it's starting to weaken?!

Note: Interlude: If the problem still persists up to this point, refer to line 8.
If up to this point and after line 8 nothing changes, go back to where you stopped, i.e., line 3 and continue.


4 Reinstall the drivers for your graphics card.
5 Run an antivirus scan with Bitdefender / Spybot and Avg Free and especially Avira Antivir (all these programs are free, but the best free one is Avira Antivir free version; but try any antivirus + anti-spyware).
6 Remove the graphics card from your motherboard and insert it back in properly.
7 Was your screen connected to a power outlet during a storm? => take apart your screen and run your fingers everywhere to remove any static electricity, do the same inside your motherboard.
8 If it turns off every 5 seconds, 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, etc.: right-click on the desktop > properties > screensaver > power management > monitor timeout never and standby: never.
9 Is the connector of your PCI or AGP card on its last legs? In that case, change the motherboard.
10 Update your BIOS from the manufacturer's website of the motherboard and the BIOS if you are knowledgeable.
11 Is the BIOS well configured? If not: del or F2 at startup of the computer (see F5 or F4 depending on the computer/PC), refer to your motherboard manual.

NOTE: This kind of case (when the PC unexpectedly goes to sleep, whether it continues to run or not and does not restart) often happens following a prolonged sleep; in this case, disable prolonged sleep by looking in the tabs in the power management (look at line 8 and check the tabs in power management...). When prolonged sleep is active and the screen turns off, the memory stores the data and these are retrieved at the end of prolonged sleep when the PC restarts...

POST SCRIPTUM: if there are cases where the sleep mode (not prolonged) activates unexpectedly when the mouse is not in use, even when you're watching a movie (in the middle of an action scene, grrr), and when the mouse is moved again the screen lights up on the login page, then follow this step:
on the desktop, right-click (not on the shortcuts) > screensaver tab > delay, choose one that suits you (for example, 60 or 90 minutes which is the average duration of a movie) > uncheck (or not, as you wish) "On resume, display the login screen" (yes, I know it's silly simple and you had to think of it). Later

I believe I am in the same situation as several people regarding my screen.
It went into hibernation last night (the screen is black and the power button is orange), my computer is running but I can't get any image.
I tried rebooting but nothing works.
I haven't changed anything in my configuration.
The problem is that it should be working because at startup, the Windows logos appear but only for 3 to 4 seconds and then nothing.
I am quite a novice when it comes to computers...
My computer is a SONY VAIO desktop and I have Windows XP SP2.

Hello, I am on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. My problem is that my screen goes to sleep right from the startup, making it impossible to access safe mode or anything else. When I change the monitor, the issue is the same, so the problem isn't with the monitor. My sleep settings are set to never. The only installation I did was "Batman"; I think it could be related to DirectX, but how can I uninstall it without a screen? Thank you in advance for the interest you will show me.

This is probably due to the heat of the room you are in.

Your problem might be related to the BIOS settings... Indeed, you can set a time for the screen to go to sleep through this (ACPI control)... A quick solution is to load the default settings...

Hello, I have the same problem, my screen randomly goes to sleep (only when I'm playing a game) after 10 minutes to 2 hours and I can't turn it back on, but the computer is still running.
However, one time out of ten, instead of going to sleep, I get a return to the desktop with my settings reset to minimum (screen resolution changes to 800/600 instead of 1024/768 and color quality drops from 64 bits to 8) and I have to restart to avoid display issues.

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro, Windows XP, ASRock K7S8X motherboard.

Updating the graphics card and motherboard drivers hasn't changed anything.
And given the random nature of the issue, I doubt it's related to the BIOS.
Finally, if anyone has a solution because I'm completely stuck

My monitor suddenly goes into sleep mode during games.

My computer is brand new, the drivers are up to date, but my monitor is a few years old.

Is it coming from the monitor?? From the RAM??

I bought a computer and when I turn it on, it seems to work, but my screen immediately goes into sleep mode. It displays Acer and then shows "no signal" and goes to sleep. I tried with another screen, but it's the same thing. After that, I checked the manual, which says to press the button. I did it, but it doesn't work; it still goes into sleep mode.

I have a similar problem for about a week now. If I shut down the computer, when I turn it back on, the CPU runs but my screen stays black... in fact, the light indicator on my screen remains orange like when the computer is off.

To get it to work again, I switch the master switch to off, disconnect the cable that connects my screen to my computer... I reconnect it... I turn the master switch back to on, and I restart the computer.

I read somewhere that certain USB connections could cause this kind of problem; I recently bought a mouse that is by default plugged into a USB port, but I use it with a PS2 adapter to connect it to my computer.

The other strange thing is that when I SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER, the SLEEP button is not available... my problem is that I don't remember if it has ever been available.... I'm on Windows XP by the way.

I have almost the same problem, my screen goes to sleep as soon as I open a window and the light blinks rapidly, whereas in normal sleep mode it is supposed to blink slowly. I have to turn it off and on at least every time and after a while it works properly again. However, it doesn't do this with games. Please help me, thank you in advance.

definitely, it's not happening tomorrow, I have practically the same issue as you and I've gone through several forums without success.
My screen started going to sleep by itself when I was playing a high-resolution game: Wolverine.
Since then, as soon as the system starts up, there's a message: "the screen will go to sleep," or it starts up and before reaching the login screen, it tells me that Windows cannot start normally, which might be due to recently installed hardware (something I haven't done).
The rare moments when I manage to log in, after a few minutes, it goes to sleep and then there's nothing to do except restart, and the hassle starts again.

I have the same issue as you. After multiple tests (changing the screen, loading new drivers, changing DirectX, loading the screen drivers...), I ended up seeing that we should look into the screen's frequency or the AGP port. But there is nothing certain. Maybe also consider a RAM test.

Solutions :

1. Turn off your computer
2. Turn it back on and press F5; it will bring up a page. On this page, press Safe Mode
3. Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
4. Quarantine the spyware and eliminate them.
5. Turn off your computer
6. Turn it back on and press F5 and select Normal Mode
7. Defragment your C:/ hard drive and you're done!
