File cannot be deleted

Solved

Hello,
I request your help because there is a file on my external hard drive that I can't delete.
The error message says: "Cannot delete File: Cannot read from the source file or disk."
The same message appears if I try to send it to the recycle bin, rename it, or move it.
Thank you in advance.
PS: The file is named:  Ï ßk×ex.if
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

Étrange fichier. Un truc qui marche toujours : transfère ce qu'il y a sur ton disque dur externe sur ton PC et formate le disque dur externe. Et après remets tout dessus.

In the folder of the file, press F5.

If that doesn't work, download Unlocker, install it, and right-click on the file with a strange name and choose "Unlocker." Then, if it finds a program using it, expand the combo box and choose "delete." Click on "Unlock all" and a message should appear.

This has happened to me before; it's either a file writing error or a file being used by another program.

Yes, but at that moment, the message is that the deletion is impossible because it is being used by another resource.

I downloaded Unlocker as you indicated.
After right-clicking and choosing Unlocker, it tells me it didn't find a program, so I expand the menu and click on delete.
And the error response is: "The object couldn't be deleted. Would you like to schedule the deletion for your next restart?"
Is it worth clicking yes and restarting?
By the way, I must have made a mistake because now there are three files.
(In another forum, I saw the idea of creating a text file with that name and then trying to replace the old one, which I tried, and since then: 3 undeletable files instead of one."

Super great, thanks it worked for me.

Thank you very much, dear cousin. You did me a great service, and the unlocker is very good.

Am I being asked if I want to restart? I say yes?

Hi,
Check that it is not in "read-only"
Have the rights on this file
try a
ERASE or DEL *.if
in console mode

An antivirus that did not detect any issues with this file?

Hello,

Actually, I downloaded a software called 360 Monitor for Corporator Networks Server V4.7, and since I have an antivirus (Kaspersky), my problem is that I can't delete it...

Hey, what super fast responses, thank you.
So, first of all, I checked, it's not read-only; when I right-click and then properties, I see that its size is 0 bytes. But below the name, it says 9344 KB.
Good idea to transfer everything, but the problem is that I don't have enough space on my computer (it's quite old, I must say).

And finally, I have an antivirus, AVG.
I've already tried to delete this file from other computers, without success.

Otherwise, carbon3, how can I perform these actions? (ERASE or DEL *.if)

Yes, but at that moment, the message is that the deletion is impossible because it is being used by another resource

No, Unlocker kills (terminates if you prefer) the process and it deletes the file. Then it restarts the process.
And if it succeeded, then it displays the message in question.

Otherwise, carbon3, how can I perform these operations? (ERASE or DEL *.if)

From the command prompt. Type "cmd" in run and type:
 ERASE file_path\Ï ßk×ex.if

If you encounter folders with more than six letters, remove the spaces, write the first six letters of the folder
and add ~1.

So: Ville Dans la nuit becomes VILLED~1

Thus: D:\Ville dans la nuit\Ï ßk×ex.if
Becomes: D:\VILLED~1\Ï ßk×ex.if

how will he be able to type special characters? that's why I suggest the generic *.if

carbon3 Posted messages 471 Status Member 73

shadow: the message that pogolo receives is NOT "Cannot delete because it is being used by another resource"
so it's not the unlocker problem.

pogolo: you need to open a command prompt.
Start -> all programs -> command prompt
then type cd followed by the path to the directory where the file is located.
then type del or erase *.if (which if all goes well will delete ALL files with the .if extension)
<<< Just make sure that if there are any others, you actually want to delete them. >>>

I must be making a syntax error again, sorry ^^
When typing this one (I click on enter between the two)
it tells me Unable to find C:\Documents And Settings\Harold\*.if
C is my main hard drive (where Windows is and Harold is my first name)

You must see
 I:\>

when you do cd I:\
otherwise see answer no. 20.

Hello,

you can try starting in safe mode to remove it.

shadow : the message that pogolo receives is NOT "Unable to delete because it is used by another resource" so it's not the unlocker issue.

That's what I said. It’s actually you who says that the message that appears states that the program is being used by another process. However, it’s the Unlocker message that appears saying that the file has been deleted "successfully".

What can I do with the response given to me by unlocker?

Without too much surprise... it didn't work.
When trying to delete the file directly, I'm getting the same message: "Unable to delete File: Unable to read from the file or source disk."

AND when trying to delete the folder: Unable to delete Ï ßk×ex.if. The specified file is not found. Make sure that the specified path and filename are correct.

If I understood correctly, "z" corresponds to the folder, so:

cd "Documents and Settings\Harold\z"
del "Ï ßk×ex.if "

I forgot, check the name in the file properties. It may be under the MS-DOS tab with the symbol ~.

Documents and Settings is in C:\ which is my main hard drive (where Windows is)
The external drive is I:\
I'm not sure if I was very clear earlier

C:\Documents and Settings\Harold>cd "Documents and Settings\Harold\z"
The specified path could not be found.

C:\Documents and Settings\Harold>del "Ï ßk×ex.if "
Cannot find C:\Documents and Settings\Harold\Ï ßk×ex.if

I do not see this symbol in properties.

You moved documents... to drive I or is it just the file that is there?

I am really sorry for not being clear, I will go back.

On my external hard drive (called I:\) I have a folder containing 3 files that I cannot delete, these files are on I:\

The disk called C:\ is the hard drive of my computer, on which Windows and most of my software are installed, I do not use it to store my documents.

Between:
 cd z

Then:
 del "Ï ßk×ex.if "

It bugs right from the first input

C:\Documents and Settings\Harold>cd z
The specified path cannot be found.

I have the same problem. I have done all the maneuvers and the file is still live.
Best regards.

Try cd I:\z but since it's probably an unpartitioned external hard drive under FAT(32) file system, well it won't work. But go ahead and try anyway.

It still works in FAT32.

To navigate to the root, you need to type I: and not cd I:.

I'm starting to lose hope slowly

I:\>cd z

I:\z>del "Ï ßk×ex.if "

Cannot find I:\z\ Ï ßk×ex.if

Ha yes, as the last solution, put *.if instead of the file name without the quotes.

or the final command DEL *:\*.IF

I tried all of this after finishing explorer

C:\Documents and Settings\Harold>DEL *:\*.IF
The specified path cannot be found.

C:\Documents and Settings\Harold>i:

I:\>cd z

I:\z>del *if
Cannot find I:\z\*if

I:\z>i:

I:\z>del*if
'del*if' is not recognized as an internal or external command, an executable program or a batch file.

DELTREE is a command from Win98.

Try: DEL z:\*.* /F /S /Q

carbon3 Posted messages 471 Status Member 73

Hi Shadow,
You probably meant that DELTREE was a DOS command (and in our favorite OS, MS-DOS up to W98).
And also, because let's not forget that the folder z is located on the I:\ drive.
DEL I:\z\*.* /F/S/Q

But well, we can twist it in every way, clearly, it is not the right strategy.

Hello,

let's continue directly from there;

connect your external hard drive. Make sure it is recognized by Windows under I.

Click on start, all programs, accessories, then notepad
As soon as it opens, copy/paste the text below into notepad:

dir "I\*" /a > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Click on file, save as, choose to set the type to: "all files"
File name: abcde.bat and save it where you can easily find it

Double click on it, a report will open, save it and send it to me please

Hello

DIR I:\*.* /a > files.txt (right?)

But maybe we should create a file DIRI.BAT containing:

DIR I:\Z\*.* /A /S > files.txt
DIR I:\Z\*.* /AH /S >> files.txt
DIR I:\Z\*.* /AS /S >> files.txt

Then execute this file and retrieve files.txt which will be located in the directory of DIRI.BAT
See you later
PS: I think the 2nd character is not a space ....

C:\Documents and Settings\Harold\Bureau>dir "I\*" /a 1>files.txt
The specified file cannot be found.

C:\Documents and Settings\Harold\Bureau>notepad files.txt

here is the report ...

So I'm pasting what you put in the command prompt, but what do I open with Notepad?

I don't understand the inclusion of an extra asterisk between the options.
0
cgui33 Posted messages 1176 Status Member 10

Hi
Better for you ... but apparently I won't teach you anything about DOS:
/ah allows you to list hidden files
/as allows you to list system files
/a allows you to list all files without knowing their attributes

I thought it would be good to know if there are any hidden or system files!
But oh well ...
See you later
PS: for your information ... what is the * in the middle of the options?

With this we have everything:
