4G GSM USB Key for Sending and Receiving SMS on PC

Hello,

I am looking for a USB stick to send and receive SMS for my home automation, but all I can find are GSM WiFi modem USB sticks for internet?

Can you advise me on a GSM USB stick to send and receive SMS without WiFi? The goal is to send an SMS to the PC (for home automation) that executes a home automation command file.

My OS is Linux Ubuntu 20.04.5 x64.

    Yes, it exists. You need a real GSM/4G USB modem, not a Wi-Fi dongle. With a real modem (Huawei E3372 in modem mode, Quectel/SIMCom modules, etc.), Ubuntu recognizes it via ModemManager or gammu, and you can send/receive SMS from the command line.
    On Ubuntu 20.04 you can test with mmcli to send SMS, and gammu-smsd even allows you to run a script for each received SMS, perfect for home automation. Avoid dongles that create a Wi-Fi hotspot, as they do not provide access to SMS on the PC side.

    No, that Amazon link is not what you need.
    It’s a “Bluetooth phone” module, not a USB GSM modem that can be controlled under Linux.
    For your home automation use under Ubuntu, you need a USB modem that exposes a serial interface or ModemManager, for example:
