Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. However, European users can receive security updates until October 2026 through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. To benefit from this, your computer must be connected to a personal Microsoft account with administrative rights. If your computer disconnects for 60 days, it will automatically be unsubscribed from the program. So, prepare for the transition to Windows 11 or another system. Which operating system are you considering adopting in the future?

Microsoft has fixed a major bug that was preventing enrollment in the ESU program.

This fix is published under the number KB5071959. If you're experiencing issues with ESU, please install the update via Windows Update.

      Hello @HelpiOS StatusModerator

Just a message to echo yours and confirm that it works perfectly after this update. It only takes 30 seconds to activate the extension when you already have a "trash" Microsoft account, which is my case.

      Hello,

My nephew has the Student version, but the KB5071959 update is not being offered in Update.

Is there a solution to force this update?

        Hello Antoine,

If your nephew is the administrator of the computer, has installed all the updates, and is signed in to his Microsoft account, he should be eligible for the ESU program, even with the Education version. Note that he must be on version 22H2 of Windows 10.

However, if his computer is managed by his institution, they will first need to subscribe to a plan for him to be able to apply the ESU program.

Although the ESU program allows you to continue receiving security updates for Windows 10, your old PC is not obsolete and can very well host a new operating system to give it a new life.

If you want to migrate to Windows 11 but your PC is not officially compatible, there is a free and legal trick that allows you to force its installation with a simple command. The method is explained in this article. And according to feedback, Windows 11 works without issue, and all data is preserved.

If you are rather tempted to migrate from Windows 10 to a Linux distribution and do not know which one to choose, this guide will help you make your choice. You will also find a link to a tool that will allow you to filter them according to your own criteria.

Among the distributions, Zorin OS currently attracts Windows 10 users with its familiar interface and lightweight design. There is also AnduinOS, which takes on an appearance identical to Windows 11 and was actually developed by a Microsoft engineer.

      Hello

I signed up for the ESU program, but these security updates won't last long.

I've always been resistant to Linux.

I'm aware that what I'm going to say is silly.

For security reasons, while Windows is a real Swiss cheese.

But I have in mind that Windows is monitored by a big company, and at the first misstep, we know everything.

Plus, the operation of Linux seems super complicated to me.

      I've always been tempted, but...

      Hello,

The ESU is anyway a false good idea, it’s taking a step back to jump better.

But a number of Linux distributions are becoming more and more user-friendly, such as Linux Mint, without necessarily needing to get your hands dirty with the command line at least initially, and looking very much like Windows in the interface.

Now, if it’s still your old dinosaur, there’s no miracle, it’s still illusory to install the latest version of Linux with all its features on it.

Yes, it is indeed my dinosaur.

I know there are light distributions like Zorin, but what puts me off are the command lines, although I occasionally use them.

For example, with ADB to clean a phone of bloatware, but it's occasional.

My computer still supports Windows 10 Pro without any complaints.

If we want to go all the way with this, under Windows we may also have to use the command prompt or PowerShell for a number of things.

In modern consumer Linux distributions, we don't really use the equivalent any more in our daily lives.

      Hello,

It seems to me that I mentioned the question in another thread on the same topic (Tahiti) that Microsoft relies on the geographical identification code to determine who is part of the European Economic Area and who isn't, see here in <19> on how to verify it.

This list means that according to Microsoft, the French overseas territories are neither in France nor in Europe.

Microsoft has extended the ESU program until October 12, 2027.

Windows 10 will continue to receive security updates until that date.

To enroll in the public ESU program, you must meet these requirements:

    • Be running Windows 10 22H2, including Home, Pro, Education, and Workstation editions (excluding devices managed by Active Directory).
    • Have installed all updates via Windows Update.
    • Be signed in with an administrator account.
    • If you have a local account, you will be asked to provide a Microsoft account at the time of enrollment.

      Hello,

Indeed, and that’s even rather humorous, if Microsoft had any philanthropy, it would be known.

The analysis is that Windows 11 flopped among many professionals who balked for various reasons, and now among individuals, the purchase of new PCs is plummeting due to the increase in RAM and SSDs.

        Hello brucine,

Exactly, between Windows 11 which still struggles to convince, alternative systems that are sometimes restrictive (incompatible proprietary software and drivers...), and rising prices, extending the deadline was more than necessary.
