Invalid MS-DOS

Hello,

I'm trying to transfer files from one external hard drive to another because the first one is failing.

With some files, when I copy/paste, the error message "Invalid MS DOS Function" appears. What does that mean and how can I move my files?

Thank you

Hello

What operating system?

There are many free software options to copy the content of a disk

Hello,

Normally, this doesn't happen when copying, but it occurs when an exe is executed and is not compatible with the version of Windows, as if one were trying to install a 64-bit program on a 32-bit system, or a 16-bit program on a 64-bit system.

Otherwise, the system used for the copy might be damaged or not responding well to copy errors.

Try copying the data with Supercopier 2.2 beta

https://github.com/gligli/SuperCopier2/releases/tag/2.2b

It provides more options, such as in case of a copy error: Skip, or Retry, or Always skip, or Always retry.

Hello,

It would be good to have examples of the files in question as well as their location (such as the Windows system drive, user folders, etc.)..

The error occurs because the copy process cannot read the file in question, and the causes are varied: corrupted file (in which case, no matter the copy procedure, we will be stuck), attempting to copy a file larger than 4GB to a FAT32 destination, interception by antivirus, encrypted file, read-only system file, NTFS permissions...

In the last 3 scenarios, assuming the source drive is a Windows system drive, we can try the operation by booting out of Windows, in real DOS mode from the console of a Windows installation USB or from a Linux Live USB.
