Hello everyone,

For the past few days, Orange's mail servers have strengthened their anti-spam protection and are blocking the sending of emails that do not come from an unregistered domain with Orange or without a certificate.
Fortunately, receiving still works.

Does anyone know of a DNS that is still being rerouted by Orange?

C.

Hello,

I no longer use the Orange address since I haven't had an account for several years (the password has been blocked due to intrusion attempts and, since I no longer have an account, I can no longer change it) but, back when it was still working for receiving, I always found it impossible to send an email from that address using any SMTP server, even though I am with another ISP.

I'm not sure that the DNS have any influence; they are related not to the email itself but to the internet connection. I use Cloudflare's DNS; have you tried using Orange's 80.10.246.2/129?

You need to consider two things, the DNS servers for websites and the DNS servers for emails. They are not necessarily the same (well, more or less...)

There can be an email server that is not associated with a web server... The provider has its DNS server, but it can also reroute the request to the mail server of another domain.. For example, with Bouygues, it is possible to send an email using a Gmail address by using the SMTP server "smtp.gmail.com," but if you try to send an email with an address from Free using Free's SMTP server... you receive this message:

The message could not be sent.
An error occurred while sending the email: SMTP server error. The server responded: <unknown[2001:861:324b:ee50:f8:2176:188:d0d8]:60573>: Client host rejected: Access denied.

I can deduce that Bouygues refuses to reroute messages from Free unless we go through Bouygues' SMTP server.

And with Orange, it's simple.. nothing goes through without certificates.. and only via their SMTP server.

(Tests done with Thunderbird)

I suppose it depends on the email client; mine has no options for specific DNS.

One thing is certain, at least for me, as an SFR subscriber, I had no way to send an email from my Orange address, regardless of whether I chose the Orange or SFR SMTP.

From memory, I also experienced the opposite while traveling, with no way to send an email from my SFR address when connecting, for example, to an Orange Box, but not only that.

I don't know what the mechanism is; I guess Orange detects that the message starts to transit through a server that is not its own (SFR) even if the chosen SMTP is that of Orange.

The providers are stepping up their fight against spam..
On one hand, it's a good thing, but it comes at the cost of losing certain conveniences..
At my place, with Orange, it happened on Tuesday around 3 PM.. since then, it's been blocked.

I still contacted Orange.. there is no plan to re-route to an SMTP that depends on a domain not hosted by Orange.

It's true that I have a minimalist setup without a certificate both for receiving and sending... the solution will be to change my email client (and lose the benefits of the old one)..
