Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card is no longer usable

Hello everyone,

It has now been a full day that I've been trying to resolve my graphics card issue without success. I'm therefore seeking your help before resorting to a repair shop as a last option. I have a 2018 Lenovo Legion with an Nvidia GTX 1050 dedicated GPU inside. Recently, it has stopped working and is even causing fatal crashes (blue screen). The error code points to a graphics card problem.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, but it doesn't work, and updating the BIOS keeps it in my device manager with code (43). However, I can prevent Windows from forcing the card to stop by reinstalling the drivers, but the Nvidia control panel application still refuses to open, and the card does not appear in my task manager. Also, in my GeForce Experience application, after reinstalling the driver, it continues to offer me the latest version of the driver, which obviously cannot be installed via the application.

If you have any ideas on how to solve this problem, I'd be grateful. Thank you in advance.

Maxime

Hi Maxime,

So it's a laptop that you have = brand and model??

To be concise, the GTX 1050 appears in the device manager, but it doesn't display anything on the screen

At first glance, the GTX 1050 should not be soldered, you can find it for sale

For me, it needs to be replaced

That's why it's important to know the exact reference of the laptop

See you later

Hello,

Thank you very much for your response; the exact reference for my computer is as follows:

So do you think it's related to the hardware? I'm having a hard time understanding how it's possible as it hasn't been subjected to any shock in the meantime; is wear enough to move the components?

Anyway, thank you very much for your response, I will try to contact Lenovo support to see what they propose, but I'm no longer under warranty so I hope it won't cost me an arm and a leg...

As I looked more closely at the manufacturer's website, I found a hardware diagnostic tool and it turns out that the scan detects no problems and recognizes the card (purely physically), see the attached screenshot:

The problem is getting more and more complicated... What do you think about a complete reset of the computer? Among the other issues encountered by the computer, I have a BIOS update that refuses to install for some reason; could that be related?

It's clear from your first post that it's a driver issue with the IGP (HD630) and the dedicated GPU (GTX1050). You should reinstall them. You could start by updating the chipset drivers for the motherboard if they're available on Lenovo's website, then the ones for the GTX1050.

Next: there is the possibility of a scan here

Thank you very much for your response,

I have run the scan and all the drivers are up to date. I have reinstalled the dedicated Nvidia driver for the 1050 several times but to no avail. It confirms the installation at the end of the process but continues to suggest the update. By the way, I also reinstalled the Nvidia control panel but the program does not launch and doesn't even run in the background...

As for the IGP, it works wonderfully with good performance for that matter.

RE

it's not always good to want to install the latest drivers, and the latest BIOS => you can end up with beta files that are not released

if everything is working normally, don't touch it

I found a complete disassembly video for Y520 = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjGr9LpyoRc

he also talks about his life, which is why it's so long (a lot of off-topic)

another video to remove the bottom of the Lenovo = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KYETESpTGM

as for the BIOS, I will try to reset it

unplug everything = power cable, battery removed, lithium battery (it should be under a black plastic sheath) unplugged

probably of this type

short the two contacts on the motherboard with a flat screwdriver while pressing the power button at the same time

and put everything back together

don't touch the BIOS for now

let's first look at the GTX 1050, if you're still having this non-functioning problem

Hi, thanks again for your reply,

I took a look at the videos you sent me, it doesn't seem that complicated to take apart, I've never done that...

As for resetting the BIOS, I confess I have no idea how to go about it, is it the procedure you described above?

However, I have made some progress; I managed to remove error 43 in the device manager by disabling the device > uninstalling drivers and software > restarting > reinstalling drivers and software > re-enabling the device.

But it still doesn't seem to be communicating with Windows...

hi

this is the procedure I set at position <8>, to reset the BIOS (to the lithium battery), if the PC doesn't resist and everything else works well => not necessary for the moment

in device manager, do you still have the yellow triangle for the GTX1050? - (you did restart the PC, right?)

" But it still doesn't seem to communicate with Windows..." => let's wait a few days for more conclusive feedback

see you later

Hello,

Windows + R
Type --> devmgmt.msc and OK.

Provide the hardware ID of the device
Look at this --> Find the device identification number
Post the number in your next message.

Download and install --> 7Zip 64 bits

Download this driver --> nVidia

Right-click on the driver --> 537.13-notebook.......exe
Select --> 7Zip
Choose --> extract to "537.13-notebook.......\"

Uninstall the card cleanly with DDU
Check out this tutorial, step 2 --> Display Driver Uninstaller
Restart the PC

Go to Device Manager
Right-click on the device
Update Driver
Browse my computer for driver software
Choose from a list of drivers...
Have Disk
Browse
Go to the folder of the unzipped driver --> 537.13-notebook.......
Folder --> Display.Drivers
Select the file --> nvltig.inf and OK.
Restart.

Thank you for your response, I followed the instructions,

uninstalled in safe mode with DDU all Nvidia GPUs, restarted and reinstalled the driver using the nvltig.inf file and when I restart after all these operations I still have error 43.

However, I noticed two strange things:

- The display of two graphics cards during the driver reinstallation

- but also, after the supposed cleanup without drivers, the card in the manager still shows the Nvidia driver (see photo)

Maybe I missed something in the process, I will do it a third time to be sure

Try to manually install the Intel chipset drivers

Hello epango, thank you very much for your response. I manually updated the Intel drivers but there’s no difference after rebooting. Thank you anyway.

In the image, the driver is from 2018.

So, redo the manual driver installation.

Forget about displaying the 2 graphics cards.

Right-click on the nVidia card
Update Driver
Browse my computer for drivers
--> Choose from a list of drivers...
--> Have Disk
--> Browse
Go to the folder of the extracted driver --> 537.13-notebook.......
Folder --> Display.Drivers
Select the file --> nvltig.inf and OK.
Restart.

Hello Kaneagle,

Thanks again for your response, yes the screenshot was just after the cleanup with DDU, I was indeed surprised that there was still an Nvidia driver even though it dates back to 2018.

As for the driver installation after cleaning, the card with the 2018 driver does not report error 43. So I proceed to install the driver manually.

After choosing the file and clicking OK, I systematically get this window in (not responding) mode.

Then I continue the driver installation, the graphics card seems to work.

However, after restarting the computer, I get error 43 again...

I am starting to lose hope, I can only see one explanation, that the card is screwed... The problem is that I don’t know if I can find a compatible card, when I go to the Lenovo support site in France, it doesn’t show any spare parts available.

Otherwise, do you think it's possible for me to take the opportunity to put in a more powerful one?

Perform a clean installation of Windows 10.

If the problem persists, is there a faulty card?

before changing the graphics card, or reinstalling Windows

try to recreate the Windows system image

right-click on the Windows logo, and launch PowerShell as an administrator

you will have the CMD command window, and you will execute the command sfc /scannow

then you will launch the command to recreate the system image

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
This allows you to repair the operating system without losing data
(from time to time, there is about a 15-minute wait, let it work = a good hour)
see = https://learn.microsoft.com/fr-fr/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/repair-a-windows-image?view=windows-10
often, error 0x800f081f = https://www.ionos.fr/digitalguide/serveur/configuration/eliminer-lerreur-0x800f081f/

and you will restart the system several times

if no improvement, as already said, change the graphics card => see my post <2> and reiterated post above

.

change the graphics card before reinstalling Windows (which for me is not the cause)

Hello to both of you,

Sorry for the delayed response,

Thanks again for your reply. I tried your method of scanning and reinstalling the Windows image, but it doesn't work either. I still have error 43.

I'm going to back up to an external drive and try a factory reset to see if that makes a difference. If it still doesn't work, I'll take it to Lenovo for repair.

In any case, thank you very much for your help, and I will post the solution that works here so that others who might have the same problem can benefit from it.

Re

so it's really not a matter of drivers or Windows

it's the graphics card that needs to be replaced (my first thought)

=> so back to post <2> for the card

=> to post <8> for the PS portable disassembly videos

don't forget the thermal paste if you're changing the card

supposed position of the graphics card

if you have a magnet, it's handy for removing screws, taking out the graphics card (or a processor), magnetizing the tips of screwdrivers ...

be careful with the pins on the motherboard, they bend very easily => no sudden movements when reattaching the GPU and the thermal paste (a thin layer)
