I7 13700k CPU overheating issue

Hello

I just built my new PC and my i7 13700K reaches 50 degrees at startup and fluctuates between 38 and 45 at idle. In Cyberpunk at 1080p 60fps with max and ultra RTX settings, I have spikes up to 96 degrees. During a stress test, it exceeds 106. I have a Be Quiet Shadow Rock 3 with a 190W TDP to cool it down, and I’ve already checked if the thermal paste was applied correctly; it was perfectly done. I'm monitoring the temperatures with CPUID and there are strange spikes that last less than a second. I’m not sure if my cooler is sufficient or if there’s another issue; so far there haven't been any crashes or BSODs, just the CPU throttling, and I’m hesitant to play at full throttle which is annoying. I'm open to any help, thanks in advance.

Hello

If people are still looking, you just need to remove the automatic OC from the motherboard (for me, a Z790 P) and the processor doesn't exceed 85°C under stress test with a Noctua NH-D15 without any loss of performance :)

See you later

For the bugs, I had a faulty new RAM stick, but for the overheating, I need to buy a water cooler to check. It goes up to 106 degrees on a gaming installation, so I wonder if my CPU has the thermal paste applied properly, or if it's the 13700k that has an issue.

Hello

I have an MSI MEG S360 AIO and I'm reaching up to 100°C during stress tests.

I haven't found a solution to lower the temperature. In normal usage, it doesn't get this high, but it still bothers me quite a bit.

Hello,

in the advanced power settings of Windows (I'm not sure if it's still there on Windows 11), you can lower the maximum processor state, which can help reduce the temperature

as for the temperatures.. maybe try using different thermal paste >

and then as John said, we also need to look at the ventilation in the case; with a processor like that, you need at least 2 or 3 fans on each side (at the front and at the back/top)

Edit: well, blue screen and I don't know why.

Good evening,

The i7 13700K consumes up to 253w when the core frequencies are at their maximum, exceeding the TDP of your cooler. However, this consumption is only reached during stress tests; in gaming, I would say it should consume between 100 and 150w, which your be quiet shadow rock 3 should be able to dissipate properly. Check your CPU fan curve in the BIOS and set it to a more aggressive profile; you should have lower temperatures while gaming.

Good evening, I have already tried setting my fan to 100% but it doesn't change anything, 3 degrees better at idle, I left a better curve afterwards but it's the idle temperature that spikes to 70 degrees for a fraction of a second that worries me.

Try to optimize the airflow of your case, and if that’s not enough, you should consider installing a larger heatsink or even water cooling.

So my problem would come from the cooling itself and not from a failure of my hardware. I've heard people on forums say that the i7 13700k runs hot. What water cooling would be sufficient? I'm not very familiar with it; I usually only use air coolers.

On the forum I was talking about earlier, one of the people had this cooler, he had the same problem as me, he undervolted his CPU to lower the temperature, I am on the Z790 BIOS from Asrock and no one knows how to do it at the moment, it's too recent so I think I'm going to have to switch to water cooling, thank you for your help.

Hello, I'm having the same problem as you even though I'm using an Nzxt X53 water cooler! I'm not really sure what the issue is; sometimes I feel like there's a bug with the CPU temperature sensor.

I'm wondering if there are issues with those processors or with the z790... I have the MSI, but still...

I was also experiencing game crashes and BSODs in Warzone 2, for example.

Have you resolved your problem?

Try pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE once the PC has started and keep the task manager open; I've gained almost 20 degrees.
