High CPU temperature: i7 13700k Warzone 2

Hello everyone,

I built a PC from scratch in the last few days, here’s the config:

- i7 13700k

- rtx 4090 suprim X

- 32 GB DDR5 6600

- MSI MEG S360 Aio

- MSI MEG Z690 UNIFY

- 2 1440p screens (144 and 360 htz)

When idle, the processor averages a temperature of 38-45 degrees C, and on Warzone 2, it varies between 80 and 87 degrees C.
I haven’t overclocked the processor and I’m wondering:

1/ if the temperatures are normal? I find them slightly high for just gaming.

2/ if I have any risk with the arrival of summer and the heatwave?

The graphics card never exceeds 68/69 degrees in the game.

The performance is excellent, averaging 250 FPS at 1440p in the game.

Thank you for your responses!

Hi, I just got a 13700 too and in MW2 I'm generally at 50°! I also added a Thermalright on my motherboard! This helps me cool it better! You gain a few degrees and check your thermal paste in the process. Then you can also adjust your CPU temperature curve in the BIOS.

Hi, which Thermalright do you recommend?

Hello,

Indeed, the processor is much too high - and how much is your GPU when your graphics card takes over?

The GPU 68 approximately

and your CPU at the moment it starts?

With what tool do you see the temperature?

Aida64, as explained, when I am on Warzone 2, CPU 80-87° and GPU 68°, should I check anything else?

I modified the title of your post

I just did a 3-minute stress test on Aida and here are the results

The CPU ranges from 80 to 94 max

Your setup looks very recent, doesn't it!? Did you do the assembly yourself?

yes

If I were you - I would double-check the connection between the cooler and the processor!! I think it’s more on that side!!?

But remotely!! (not easy)

maybe check if the CPU cooler is properly secured, or if there is any play (also check the thermal paste if it's too dry, it can affect its performance)

also check and test or have the sensors tested!!?

I have to go to work

Someone will most likely take over

Hello, have you found a solution because I have the same problem in Warzone 2? However, when I enable power saving mode, it doesn't heat up while playing.

RTX 4090, 32GB DDR5, Z790 Hero motherboard.

Hello

Indeed, with all these cores, this CPU is capable of reaching very high temperatures very quickly. It can demand the most powerful cooling systems in gaming, and will certainly be part of the systems during the hottest periods where we will need to moderate its power according to the outside temperature.

It's a performance beast; some will use it in games at very high, if not astonishing, temperatures.

The junction temperature is 100°, and the current temperatures reaching 95° are allowed by software settings often provided with the hardware as well as the games, which, for what it’s worth, are overclocking software; the mw2 player must monitor and limit the power at each use just like an overclocker. The "base power" is 125W as stated by Intel, but a "max turbo power" of 253W, which is significantly higher, already suggests the very high temperatures mentioned here.

Note Intel's remark on ark intel: Note: the maximum turbo power is configurable by the system provider and may be specific to the system.

Instantaneous power can exceed the maximum turbo power for short durations.

So, this is indeed a PC that can be sold new, already in an "out-of-bounds" overclocked configuration, flirting with throttling constantly; it is up to the user to manage and limit the power to the maximum possible at each use if they wish.

Get your thermometers ready and have good gaming.
