Word Document in "Chinese"

Solved

Hello,

In my job search, I wanted to recover paragraphs from a Microsoft Word 97-2003 (.doc) document. But here's what shows up when I open it:

I noticed new (suspect?) folders on the USB key where the Word file LM is located.

Virus? In any case, a scan with AVG = Nothing found

Is my LM recoverable?

Thank you.

    Hello,

It is not specified in your messages, but I think it is important to remind that it is unwise to work directly on a USB stick that should only be used for transporting data.

    I marked it as Resolved.

    Thank you all anyway.

    Hello,

The SystemVolume folder is a system folder and is nothing unusual; the FOUND folder often indicates corrupted files from a previous CHKDSK scan, see if there is anything recoverable there:

Do I need to run a CHKDSK analysis again? The last one was maybe 1 year ago. I had a second blue screen recently there. Could it have affected my USB key that was plugged into the Freebox Révolution (Server)?

Otherwise, I'm going to delete my LM. It's not an important file.

And can I delete the 2 folders without any risk as well?

My CHKDSK analysis gets stuck at 10% on startup.

Does taking apart the PC and removing the hard drive yesterday have an effect?

I also experienced yet another blue screen of death. After the Driver Power State Failure, now it’s the "NTFS File System" that is stuck at 0%.

Yesterday I also encountered this on my black USB stick where my Chinese document is stored.

Not damaged because I still have access to it. What's the best thing to do? Reset the system to zero.

I ran an AVG scan and it finds nothing.

I managed to get out of that stuck CHKDSK. I turned off the computer. Then restarted, then pressed Escape to cancel the hard drive scan. A message popped up, but I can't remember what it said. After that, I went into the advanced options and refreshed the PC. Then I was asked for a Windows backup file. Luckily, when I tried to install the Windows 10 update a few days ago, I was advised to make a Windows backup (ISO image) on an external hard drive. I had done that. It really helped me this morning.

As for the Chinese file, I'm going to delete it from the recycle bin and empty the bin.

What should I do about my USB stick? Besides the AVG scan, which didn't yield any results? Any other software or website for a more in-depth analysis?

      Thank you.

Problem with chkdsk resolved, so no need to do a system restore, phew!

For the Chinese file, I deleted it and emptied the recycle bin.

As for my USB drive, I transferred the files to another one. We'll see.

      Thank you.
