Ubuntu Installation on SSD

Hello,

I retrieved an old HP Compaq 6510b laptop on which I want to install Ubuntu on a Crucial MX500 SSD.

Unfortunately, it fails every time, only on the SSD. I have a black screen and the installation does not start. I specify that I have properly converted the SSD to MBR, but it doesn't change anything.

However, I have no problems installing it on the original HDD.

Thank you in advance to everyone who can provide a solution.

    Hello,

The fact that you have a black screen has nothing to do with the disk on which you want to install Ubuntu. Does anything happen if you press ctrl alt F2 when the black screen appears? Is there anything written on the screen? If so, what?

Moreover, there’s no particular reason to set an SSD as MBR; these days, we would rather use GPT.

    • Have you correctly prepared your live USB for the installation?
    • Is it a recent version of Ubuntu?
    • Are you sure the SSD is functional?
    • If you manage to install Ubuntu on the HDD, why is the SSD not visible at the time of partitioning?

    Good luck

    Hello,

To be more precise, I tried to install Ubuntu Budgie on a HP laptop from 2007. When I boot from the Rufus USB drive, the main menu appears. It asks me if I want to try or install Ubuntu, so I click on install. The loading logo appears and then I get a black screen with a small cursor in the upper left corner, but it doesn't go any further. I see the Rufus USB drive active for a few minutes and then nothing, it stays stuck in that state for over an hour.

I should mention that I installed Windows 10 without any problems, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.

I worked around the problem by installing Ubuntu on the same SSD but with another PC (a Fujitsu Esprimo from 2012) where the installation went smoothly. Then, I put the SSD with Ubuntu back into the HP laptop and it recognized it without any issues. That's the only solution I found, so the problem is partially resolved... even though I would have liked to know why Ubuntu wouldn't install on the 2007 HP. Maybe the BIOS is too old??

    Hello,

When you have a black screen, it means the graphical server is crashing. This is therefore a problem related to the video card and the driver that Ubuntu is trying to load.

If the installation menu allows it (as is the case with Debian), you should launch the installation without a graphical interface (in text mode).

Otherwise, a simple way to work around the problem is to install Ubuntu without a graphical interface (for example, by using an Ubuntu server), and then install a graphical environment later (for example, the ubuntu-desktop package).

    Good luck
