How to test my network card?
Solvedbazfile Posted messages 58432 Registration date Status Modérateur Last intervention -
Hello,
Following a storm, I found myself without internet on my PC.
The Free support sent me an Orange technician who made the outdoor repair, but we couldn’t test the connection because the box seemed to have been struck by lightning. I went to change it, but now I have Wi-Fi, the landline works, but I can't get internet on the PC.
Is it possible to test my network card? And if so, can I replace it easily?
Thank you.

Hello.
but impossible to have internet with the PC.
When asking a question, it is better to be specific; remember that I can't see what you see from a distance.
We don't know which network card you're talking about or the type of connection. Is this PC connected via Ethernet, WiFi, or Ethernet through powerline adapters?
Does the network card show an error in the device manager, or does it not appear at all?
Is it a desktop PC or a laptop?
If it's a laptop, what is the brand and model of the PC? If it's a desktop, please provide the exact brand and model of the motherboard?

a hello, a response, a thank you are always appreciated.
I will try to be as thorough as possible.
Desktop computer purchased from a builder.
It does not have a Wi-Fi module and is connected to the box via an RJ45 cable (simply Ethernet).
The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2.
In the device manager, under network adapters, there is:
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
TAP Windows Adapter V9.
Both are highlighted in green.
Since my question, I have replaced the initial Ethernet cable with the one that powers the TV, which works. Same result, no connection, but the cable is no longer the issue.
I then opened the sides of the computer and noticed that there is no network card. A box is attached to the motherboard. When I turn on the computer, a green light comes on this box but as soon as I launch the internet, this light turns yellow.
That's where I stand. Have a good evening.
Does the Realtek Ethernet network card on the motherboard show an error in the device manager?
If it shows an error, it is probably faulty; this often happens after a lightning strike like yours. You can replace it with a PCI Ethernet card like THIS CARD —this is just one example; there are plenty of others for you to choose from.
It's very easy to change; the PCI Ethernet card connects to one of the two PCI ports on your motherboard indicated by the two red arrows, see below:
Hello,
The attached photo is identical to my motherboard. The only difference is that I have a CPU fan.
The case I'm talking about is the one in the center with a barcode. (orange light)
The device manager does not report it as faulty since there is a green checkmark under its name. However, since it's not the cable, there are no other solutions.
Can you confirm that I can install a card in the PCI slots?
However, I need help choosing one.
No need for Wifi, just an ethernet port.
Let me know if you need any more information.
Thanks for everything you do.
You say:
The attached photo is identical to my motherboard. Except that I have a fan on the CPU.
Yes, it's your bare motherboard without any installed components, so it's normal that the processor is not present.
The device manager does not report it as faulty since there is a green line under its name.
I wonder if you're looking in the right place; there is no green line in the device manager, what you need to check is whether your Ethernet network card is working, so go to the device manager, right-click on your Realtek network card and choose properties, see below:

Can you confirm that I can install a card in the PCI slots?
Yes, they are designed to accommodate PCI cards such as Ethernet or WiFi network cards.
However, I need help choosing one.
I have already indicated one in my message 4 it is sufficient, but if you have a Freebox Pop or Delta that provide more bandwidth than the Freebox Revolution and Mini4k, you can choose another card that handles, for example, a speed of 2.5 GB see this example.
Hi,
I was looking in the right place. By right-clicking and selecting Properties, under the General section, it says: This device is working properly.
Noticed in your screenshot there is a green line under the icons????
Regarding the first card, it's a Wifi card, but mine is an Ethernet card for Windows 7 64 bits.
My Freebox is the Mini4K.
In any case, any PCI standard Ethernet card will do the job.

It's an Ethernet card for Windows 7 64-bit.
If you're still on Windows 7, you should upgrade to Windows 10 since Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft (no more updates), which makes it gradually obsolete and not very secure.

Hello
Can you connect to the Freebox interface?
If yes, then the PC's network card is fine, the problem is with the box.
If not, the problem is indeed with the PC, either the card or Windows.

Hello,
This morning I received my network card, installed it right away and .... everything is working normally.
A big thank you to you Bazfile for your help because I was really in a bind. Thanks also to flo88 who arrived too late, but no matter, it's the thought that counts.
Have a nice day everyone.
Best regards
