New hard drive problem

Hello!

Having bought a new hard drive (HDD SMR)

Because an old hard drive started showing signs of failure (strange noises, slowdown)

I transferred all files and folders from the old one to the new one (the content wasn't important, just a few video and image files).

And since then this one seems to have difficulties, it takes a long time to display things while another one does not, then after restarting the PC it performed a mini chkdsk at startup (on the Windows icon)

At the moment I’m writing, this disk remains stuck at 100% activity time (indicated by the Performance tab).

Moreover my defragmentation system, which runs every two months, happened to run just before I’m writing here and the defragmentation started with a very long process; I stopped it after an hour (is it due to the large number of transferred files?).

My previous hard drive is still connected but seems to be working.

I can provide more information if I’ve forgotten anything.

Is this a failure issue or could it come from elsewhere? Knowing that this hard drive is new.

      As I replied to someone lower down, ever since I moved the PC tower, the activity time instantly dropped from 100% to 0% and it started a defragmentation that is still in progress, and the hard drive no longer blocks at 100%.

      Compared to the previous defragmentation that I had to interrupt, this one is proceeding normally, but it will take a long time because of the many files that were transferred.

    Hello,

    From Terminal (Admin) (PowerShell) run a chkdsk /f x:

    (Replace x with the drive letter)

    You can then download Puran Defrag and perform a startup defragmentation of this drive, Unrelated option and without reboot, which will shut down the PC afterwards.

      It's strange; I just moved my PC tower, and since then the 100% activity stayed on zero. And it started an automatic defragmentation (after a big freeze when I moved the PC), from Auslogics Disk Defrag, and everything seems faster now. It also showed me a notification to restart the PC to fix disk errors. Could this be a problem with the SATA connection inside the case?

        You should never move a disk while it is spinning.

        Answer O for yes for CHKDSK

        Unplug and replug the cables.

        A defragmentation is currently in progress and the disk is no longer at 100% blocked with scandisk; it won't go higher than 95-98%

        I don't dare to move my PC tower too much right now ^^

      Sorry! I forgot the question about the 44 degrees. Actually my hard drives are in placements at the bottom front inside of the case, just below the fan, because before they were just in front, but I had to remove those placements because of the new longer graphics card and they forced me to put them underneath (with closer spacing).

      I can't do better unless one day graphics cards return to medium sizes.

    I left the defragmentation running and after 8H (I just woke up to check), it returned to the same problem, because after 90% of this defragmentation, it started to lock back at 100% activity (instead of staying at 95-98% for the 7H of defragmentation), then to peak on the disk transfer rate graph (as in the image below, whereas if you look at the previous post the image shows an activity rate at 100% and a disk transfer rate :

    I forgot to run a HD Tune and by launching a Benchmark mode (which is in the image further below), during the defragmentation (and having bumped the tower to put it back in place), it seems to have started again and no longer makes peaks in the disk transfer rate like the previous image, but something else as shown in the image below (but the activity time remains stuck at 100%, whereas during the previous hours it did not):

    Unable to edit my message due to the image, here is the HD Tunes Error Scan image in Quick Scan mode:

    Since the defragmentation restarted, the percentages advance slowly, but no longer seem as slow as between 90% and 91% of it; as I write this we are at exactly 94%, and the progress comma advances more regularly slowly due to what must be left to defragment, but steady)

    So where does the problem come from?

    The defragmentation is finished after more than 10 hours (Usually when there is a lot to do it takes a max of 5 hours).

    I redid a benchmark with HD TUNES and here is what it shows:

    And here are the performance graphs at the start of the Benchmark and at the end:

    Now everything is back to 0% active time.

    I don’t understand where the problem could come from?

      He tells me there’s no update, but I just turned it back on and it does nothing now; it stays at 0% activity (whereas yesterday when I turned it on it showed me 100%—maybe he wanted me to run a defrag after the file transfer).

      Or perhaps when I just moved my tower, a cable realigned itself.

      I’ll monitor it and if there’s anything, I’ll come back here.

    Well I hadn't touched it for a few minutes and as soon as I tried to touch a folder to go find an image file it did this:

    At the moment I finished writing this it drops to 0% again with lots of fluctuations:

    While when I go to another hard drive (which is the one that sometimes makes strange noises and where I transferred files from that one to the new one), I open a video file this time and here is what happens:

    Do a low-level format with Active@KillDisk Freeware,

    And then initialize it in GPT using Disk Management, a NTFS format as well,

    Then, I would propose trying these 2 software tools to perform checks

    Macrorit Disk Scanner Free

    Then the Russian software Victoria for Windows

    They can test sectors on the disk.

    Macrorit for bad sectors, and Victoria for slow sectors as well, I think.

    I wouldn’t go as far as using HDAT2; if it’s really new, either we keep it after more tests or return for replacement.

    I come back after a week of observing the new disk and it seems, as early as the day after my first message, that it had returned to order; even after a small defragmentation today, there is nothing to report as abnormal.

    So I don’t know what it had on that first day—perhaps it just needed a good, solid defragmentation after transferring a lot of files.

    In any case, it’s resolved, and thank you for your help.
