MPEG4 1920X1080 or MPEG4 720X570

Hello,

I am completely new to video and do not wish to get into it.
However, I am looking to convert my VHS tapes to digital, but companies are giving me contradictory information:

- One offers high definition conversion in MPEG4 1920X1080 (application of a processing algorithm to increase the image definition to meet Full HD 1080 standards and centering of images in 4/3 so that there is no possible distortion during playback on a 16/9 screen)

- The other indicates that "If it is about digitizing VHS tapes whose standard was based on PAL/SECAM, the recovery will be done according to the same standard, i.e., in SD 720*576. HD is only possible through upscaling, by adding pixels to increase video definition. This method has the drawback of blurring the image. We do not recommend it to our customers." => the information I understand are the last two sentences.

ANY ADVICE? ANY TIPS?

THANK YOU !!!

Hello, in my opinion, there’s no point in increasing the original definition and the original ratio. We cannot reproduce nonexistent details through "upscaling"; we can only duplicate them with more or less success. Just stick with the 4/3 ratio and the 720x576 definition, and you'll have black side bands when projected. Remember, these are "memories."

Hello,

Thank you for this response.

When you say: "you will have the projection of the black sidebands". I will get this result if I do not keep the 4/3 ratio and the resolution 720/576, is that right?

Also, the company that offers the conversion to HD MPEG4 1920X1080 also offers: Encoding in the highest possible quality, Signal cleaning with TBC, Repair of broken tapes, Removal of distortion bands, Deinterlacing of the video, Color correction, Fine manual cropping of the edges of the image.
Would all these options allow for a conversion to HD? Or, in HD, will the quality inevitably be lower, as this amplifies the defects?

Thank you!

Hello, I misunderstood what you meant. The original definition and ratio must be kept, that is to say 4/3, and as you said in SD 720x576. Of course, on a TV screen, you will have black bars, that's how it is. Your service provider promises cleaning, color corrections, and fine cropping of the image edges; it's very effective, but turning a 4/3 image into 16/9 is an aberration. I agree with your interlocutor.
