Brostrend WiFi Adapter on Ubuntu

Hello,
I recently built my own PC and I found that I couldn't connect to WiFi without a cable. I then bought a WiFi adapter to connect to my router, but when I try to connect, it keeps loading for minutes only to end up not connecting with this message that says: necessary secret information not provided. What could the problem be? I feel like I'm going crazy. By the way, after about 15 minutes of trying to connect, I finally manage to, but unfortunately, it really takes me 10 to 20 minutes to connect to WiFi and that has to stop damn it.
Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

this has to stop damn it

We would be happy to forward to the relevant parties: the manufacturer of the box, the manufacturer of the Wi-Fi card, the person who assembled the PC, but we do not have this information.

On CCM, we help people by providing information about their configuration and are unable to handle complaints directed at third parties.

I couldn't pick up WiFi without a cable plugged in.

WiFi is a wireless connection; perhaps your problems begin with a misunderstanding of this point?

WiFi key to connect to my box

What you call a WiFi key is a WiFi adapter. The key is the code that is requested from you, to be entered manually or detected automatically, depending on the box, and which ensures the association between the WiFi card and the box.

secret information required not provided could be this message but in this case, you need to look for this code (the WiFi key) under the box, knowing that some ISPs like Free use a different method.

If this association fails, communication cannot be established, but a message will clearly warn you of a timeout. It is important to indicate this.

The prerequisite is that the card has been installed with the driver corresponding to your version of Windows, which we know nothing about.

Furthermore, without commanding you, for a built machine, I would try to obtain an internet connection via an Ethernet cable before tackling the WiFi problem.

The issues encountered are quite common when building a PC for the first time, which is why there are workshops and certified repairmen.

In a nutshell, precise information is more helpful than complaints to get one or more volunteer contributors interested in your case.

      Hello,
Okay, I understand what you meant, please excuse me. By the way, when you talk about the code for the WiFi key, what do you mean? Also, don't worry, I have already connected with an ethernet cable to install the driver for my WiFi key.
      Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for your understanding.

The Wi-Fi key (or code, it's the same thing) is a combination of letters and numbers that you need to enter in the input area that appears when you're trying to establish a connection between the box and the card, when your location shows up in the list of Wi-Fi access points.

With recent boxes, the connection is established automatically, but with older ones, you have to enter this code manually, and with Free, you need to connect to their site (unless this has changed with the latest models, which I am not familiar with).

If you read my post again, you will notice that the following is missing:

the brand and model of the box
the exact model of the Wi-Fi adapter
the indication of the compatibility of this card with your version of Windows (W10?)
the exact message corresponding to secret information

Looking forward to hearing from you.

OK, so my box is a livebox3 from Orange. The WiFi dongle is an AC1200 from Brostrend. I’m using Ubuntu 20.04 (and I contacted Brostrend to get the Linux driver version, so I don’t think the problem is on that side) and the message that appears with secret information is exactly as I indicated. Oh, and I forgot to mention that I don't think it's a box problem since the dongle can't connect to my phone when I attempt to share the connection either.

    Hello,
Here’s a simplified overview for you:

    1 Internet.
The Internet is full of computers all connected by cables over long distances, each website is another computer.

    2 Ethernet
Ethernet is the network (the group if you prefer) of all your computers, phones, ... at home.

    3 Connection
The connection is what links the hardware (your mobile phone, game console, PC,...) to Ethernet and/or the Internet. There are two main types:
    - Wired (you plug the outlet in your wall, and it provides phone and internet)
    - Wireless (you turn on Bluetooth or WiFi, it connects you with people, objects, and indirectly to the internet)

    4 Router
The router is like the ads on TV: Freebox, Orange box, Bouygues box...
All the PCs in your house are connected to it, and this box is connected to the internet. It's what distributes internet throughout the house.

    5 WiFi Code/Key
As explained earlier, WiFi is a signal emitted by your router. With a cable, you need to enter your home to steal internet, but with WiFi, you just need to live within 50 meters of your home. You don't want someone stealing your internet, do you? So, they put a code (or key like the one you use in a lock to close the door) on it, so thieves can't connect.

So, if you want internet, you need:
1 A phone line cable connected between your house and the pole (that's almost guaranteed you have that)
2 A router connected to the phone jack in your home.
3 Your PC connected to the router:
    - Via WiFi, you will need a component called a "network card" in your PC and the WiFi security code (your parents should have it)
    - Via cable, in which case you need an "Ethernet" cable connected from the Ethernet port of your PC to one of the Ethernet ports of your box.

The WiFi code is often written on a paper sticker attached to the router (on the bottom, the top, the sides,...). On this sticker, you will see SSID (that's the name of the network) and below KEY or CLEF or CODE. That’s your WiFi key.

Thank you, but don't worry, everything is well connected on my end; my father is an IT specialist after all. And don't worry, I have the WiFi code :). The problem is that my computer couldn't pick up the WiFi, so I bought a WiFi dongle to connect. The thing that my father and I don't understand is that I can't connect to my WiFi because a message appears: "Required hidden information not provided." So I was wondering what the problem could be. Thank you.

The usefulness of technical information. We discover that you are using Ubuntu.

I do not know enough about Linux to provide you with a viable method. From my readings, I understood that certain configurations posed issues.

As suggested by the few links I have gone through:

    Hi,
how did you install the driver?
is this what you’re talking about?
Are you far from the box?
try installing linssid to see what your reception level is.

No, that's not it, it's an AC1200 key. And I know it's not a matter of being far from the box since it couldn't connect with my hotspot on my phone.

    Hello,
Apparently this key has an rtl8812au chipset.
    Check using the command
    lsusb
    typed in the terminal.
Among all the lines that appear, look for the line that mentions Wireless, the name of the chipset should appear at the end of the line as in the example here (it's rtl8192su):

    Bus 003 Device 076: ID 07d1:3303 D-Link System DWA-131 802.11n Wireless N Nano Adapter(rev.A1) [Realtek RTL8192SU]

The installation of the driver for this type of chipset is described here:
    https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/wifi_chipset_realtek_rtl8812au

I can't find any lines with wireless when I type lsusb in the terminal...

      well,
paste here what you have, we'll sort it out.
it's not that many lines from a lsusb ...

No, but I know, there really isn't, and I can't paste precisely because I'm not on my PC (since the problem is that I don't have WiFi). By the way, now my WiFi dongle is managing to connect to the WiFi, but the internet still doesn't work. And it's not a problem with the router since it works perfectly well with my laptop.
      Thank you in advance.

    Is this the wifi key?
    https://www.amazon.com/BrosTrend-1200Mbps-Adaptateurs-Raspberry-AC1L/dp/B07FCNP2VL/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Cl%C3%A9+Usb+Wifi+Linux&qid=1606326350&sr=8-5

You should also check if the PC is within range of the wifi! By changing floors, if there is reinforced concrete between the router and the wifi receiver, it may not work well or at all. Try placing your PC near the router (or the router near the PC). You can put it back afterwards.

Yes, that's the one, and for the range, I have a WiFi extender that works very well (I tested it with my laptop, so I'm sure it's not a range issue), but thanks anyway.

        So it works on Linux.
However, in the comments, there are buyers who complain that it didn't work the first time they plugged it in. They reached out to technical support to get it working.
Has Brostrend support replied to you?

Otherwise, how did you install the driver?
