Configuring a network with Dlink access points

Solved

Hello,

I'm in the process of setting up a network with my box, a switch, and several Dlink DAP 2230 Wi-Fi access points connected to the switch. When I connect my access points, the light works, and I can connect to the network (and the internet) through the access point. So far, so good. The problem is that my 3 APs have the same name and the same IP address. So when I move around the house, my computer stays connected to the last AP I connected to and doesn't offer me the closer AP with a better signal.
In the Dlink manual, it says to connect to the address 192.168.0.50 to configure the AP (and change its SSID, for example), but when I do that, my browser says "This site is inaccessible" (Opera) or "Sorry, we can't reach this page" (Edge).
In Dlink's Troubleshooting section, they anticipate this scenario and tell me that my computer and my AP must be on the same IP subnet to connect to the AP's web interface. Then they indicate that I need to change my internet connection settings before trying again, but I believe I've tried everything, and nothing works.

Does anyone have a clue to help me? I don't know much about networks, and I've been asked for help to set this one up :/

Thanks in advance!

Configuration: Windows / Opera 68.0.3618.165

Hi, so indeed, it's just as I was telling you about the PC.
However, I still don't understand how I can set a password on my APs? Do I need to do this from the box's interface? Or by going into the administration of the APs? But again, as I was saying, I don't know how to reach that interface, since I have the "Page Cannot be Displayed" error mentioned in the manual you also found.

Thank you for your help!

Do you change the IP address of the PC to an address that is suitable for the default configuration of the AP?
For example, 192.168.0.1?

No, precisely, I entered 192.168.1.252 in the network connection, then in the properties of my Dlink connection. Wasn't that the right way to do it?

Well no,
you need to adjust your PC's IP address to match the default one of the AP....

Hello,
the IP address of an AP is only used for its management, not for use; it must be different on each one if there is no central controller.
It's normal to have the same SSID and WPA key on all APs in the same network; they just need to be set to different channels and spaced out enough.
As for why the PC stays on the same one, it's a flaw of the PC, which should switch by itself to the one with the strongest signal; the AP is not to blame.

Thank you very much for your response, which already gives me some answers.

So, if I want to rename my APs (for example, West Ground Floor, East Ground Floor, or 1st Floor), how can I do that?
And second question: how can I apply the Wi-Fi password to the box to all the APs, which currently do not require a password to connect?

What do you mean, they don't require a password?
You need to secure your network with a WPA2 key.

Yes, but currently, my access points are connected via LAN and I don't need a key to connect to them.
That's precisely why I would like to enter the administration interface of the access points to add a security key. But I can't access it, see the first message!!

I want to clarify: if I connect to the box directly via Wi-Fi, then I need the key. I am looking to set the same one on the access points.

Alright,
You need to carefully set up the PA, we’ll look at that tomorrow.

Did you base yourself on this?

Thank you for your response. Yes, I used that manual, but quite quickly, since I have a connection error, they direct me to the troubleshooting on page 110 and there, I tried everything without success (I assigned a static IP to my PC, etc.).

What IP address did you set on the PC?

I am away until Saturday, I will take a look at this and get back to you then. Do you need the number? If I remember correctly, I took the same as the box but changed the last digit, I must have put 252 (I followed the troubleshooting instructions).

Hi,
if you have 3, put 251, 252, and 253...

Raaaah... so that was it... thank you, I understand better now.

So I just assigned a different IP address and name to each PA, as well as a WPA2 key.

I think it's pretty good like that!

A big thank you for your help!

And one last question to be sure I understand correctly: if I want my 3 APs to have the same name and the same code and for transitioning between them to be seamless for a user, do I need to give them the same IP address? Thank you!

No, above all not.
The IP address is only used to administer them; it must be different on each one.

Oh okay. So is there a way to do what I just described? Just give them the same name?

The name ...
you're talking about the network name, the SSID?
see page 16 of the documentation.

Yes. Currently, I have an AP called RDC, one called 1erEtage, etc. But every time a user connects for the first time to one of these APs, they have to enter a password. If I want it to be seamless for the users, meaning they move from one AP to another without noticing the change, do I just need to give them the same SSID?
