Single Jack Headset

Solved

Hello,

I am on 64-bit Windows,
and I just bought a gaming headset "Venom Nighthawk stereo headset", which has a jack plug and a volume button on the cable.
But I can't get both sound and the microphone to work; I only have sound when I plug it into the audio jack, and the microphone only works when I plug it into the microphone jack… (and plus the microphone works poorly)

I have tried to adjust the settings in "sound > playback and recording", but it’s still not possible to have sound and the microphone at the same time... Do you have any ideas? Do I need to buy an adapter or download a specific driver?

Thank you in advance!

Good evening,

There are about 15 types of wiring for the inside of Jack plugs... So your purchase is a bit of a lottery...

It depends on which brand and model of PC you are connecting to... If you have two jacks or just one... for example, one jack for the microphone and another for the headphones...

You need to understand that a headset is a pair of headphones and a microphone in the same unit... do not confuse them... the microphone is incoming and the headphones are outgoing...

If your headset has only one jack... for all functions, it probably has four contact rings... which won't work with your PC... You should mention all this..

Here is what is written on the notice:
"To use the headset, simply plug the 3.5 mm jack directly into your PC's audio port."
"The stereo gaming headset is also the perfect device for listening to your favorite music and making Skype calls."
(so apparently there is no problem with a single jack, according to the seller!)

Anyway, I do what it says, I plug it into the audio port, and there's only sound.
And if I connect it to the microphone port, there's only the microphone...
I have other jack ports of various colors at the back of my PC, but that doesn't seem to work either.

My PC is an HP, fairly recent
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Intel Core 2 CPU 2 GHz
My audio/video and game controller is "Realtek High Definition Audio."

What HP model..?

If I guess by reading you, there are two 3.5 jacks on your PC and one on your headset..? So..? Find the error.

You’re not really answering the questions asked... I can read the manual too..

It’s clearly written
you need an adapter with Xbox 360 and some other
and that's what I believe... already mentioned in the last line of my POST... that's why you need to know the exact model of your PC... and the number of copper rings on the headset jack..? Or a photo of each on the site "cjoint.com" and you give the link here.

If it's what I think, this headset should work on your smartphone...(if it's not an Apple)

It's very difficult to catch a black cat in a dark room.
Especially when it isn't there...

Yes, but there are variations... and if it doesn't go well, we'll be blamed..!

Certainly, but these headsets are listed as "compatible with PS4, PSP, Xbox One (requires adaptor), Xbox 360, PC, Mac & tablet," so they are relatively standard...

OK, it works.

Hi,
And especially since, despite the fact that there are plenty of jack variants, there are standard pinouts that have taken over nowadays, so there isn't much diversity for standard equipment anymore.

It's almost true for the new equipment. Although...

But this standard equipment that works is never part of our forum threads... If there are only three people with issues, this is where you'll find them...

Hello, sorry for the delayed response.

The model of my HP is:
"GG684AA-ABF a6157.fr"

The jack plug is like this one:
https://www.cjoint.com/c/JFrvYvfg3oE

(and no problem on my smartphone indeed, there is mic and audio on the same jack without issue)

And the model of the headset is this one:
https://venomuk.com/get/stereo-gaming-headset/

If I understand correctly, any adapter won't do the trick?

Thanks in advance!

Try a connector of the type given in message #4.

Here is a page showing the varieties of wiring for 3.5mm jacks
https://www.google.com/search?q=sch%C3%A9ma+cablage+jacks+3.5&client=firefox-b-d&sxsrf=ALeKk01gE_kIY6F8tQVPsuz9BzAJLVHI7w%3A1592473148737&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=P3F2xQ7Isb33wM%253A%252CdB0F4-YhcYPnXM%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kRL3aNeE228B0dcBSkPnZ4zDe6MGA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwidyuDiiIvqAhWmyqYKHdo5B18Q9QEwAHoECAoQBQ&biw=1680&bih=887#imgrc=cqe2jBrUhq1ZUM

Needless to say, the risk of landing on the right one is still a bit like a lottery...

That said, it is true that some are much more common than others... Which, on the contrary, are much rarer.
There is still no NF or EU STANDARD on the subject... that foreign countries couldn't care less about.

Thank you for your responses,
I ended up buying another headset with a USB connection this time,
and it works great.

These stories about the Jack plug are really too complicated for me,
and all these PC/XBOX/PSP headsets should come with an adapter; it's a bit of a scam after all...

Yeah... It's the life we live and have created... between scams and being pushed to consume, where's the line..??

Well, for the Jacks 3.5, the trend is to move towards a single socket with four contact rings, headphones + mic and control button, all in one... there shouldn't be any old devices left that require an adapter...

That said, I purchased a hands-free headset kit not long ago, the adapter was included in the box, for the same price and it works... So you weren't lucky... Or the wrong supplier.

Anyway, you found your solution in your own way...

I am nonetheless convinced that with about ten euros the separator solution worked in 99% of cases... (the compatibility issues with jack plugs at the beginning were more with phones and other MP3s or 4s) but the requester chose to spend more on a USB entry headset, that’s their right.

Yes, I believe so too, moreover, the risk is minimal. Whereas with its USB connection, the headset won't be able to plug in everywhere.. But hey, we advise, we don't choose.
A+++
