Headset with a single jack plug

Hello everyone!
I'm facing a problem that I can't solve on my own, which is why I'm coming to ask for your help.
I bought my laptop about 2 years ago, and it came with Windows 8. Not liking Win8 at all, I reinstalled Win7 on it. However, there is only one jack for both headphones AND the microphone on this computer. Under Win8, when I connected a headset, I would plug in just one jack, and the computer would ask me to choose between Headphones/headphones or headphones/microphone. Since I've been on seven, I can't connect any microphone. The headset works, but the only microphone I can use is the one from the built-in camera. I bought an adapter, but it doesn't seem to work either, which is quite frustrating for me...
I bought this adapter: http://www.rueducommerce.fr/Accessoires-Consommables/Cable-et-Connectique/Cable-pour-enceinte/STARTECH-COM/4886322-Cable-pour-separateur-de-casque-4-broches-de-3-5-mm-vers-2-x-3-broches-de-3-5-mm-M-F.htm
Could you please help me? Thanks to those who will reply!

Good evening again,

If you're interested, I found the solution:

- Plug your headset and microphone into your adapter, and the whole thing into your single jack socket.
- Right-click on Computer/Manage/Device Manager/Sound, video and game controllers, then right-click on the driver for your sound card that appears and uninstall it.
- Restart your computer with the microphone/headset plugged in.
- Check if your microphone is detected now.
In case your computer did not reinstall the driver by itself, I suggest visiting "https://www.driverscloud.com/fr" and downloading your sound card driver.

Best regards.
