File not found

Solved

Hello to all the experts in this community,
I worked a lot on a Word file and on Windows 10. I saved it to the desktop and opened it without any issue until today when I couldn't find it on the desktop. I searched for it in recent folders and, unsurprisingly, I found it. However, when I tried to open it, I received the message:
File not found and below the path to access the file (C:etc).
I looked online for this issue that I thought was known, but not in this form since each time there’s also a need to check the file name and try again.
Could one of you help me and tell me what I can do?
Thanks in advance
Chacelco

Hello,

The file seems to have actually been deleted. In recent files, Windows does not account for its deletion.
You may have also renamed the file.
Check the recycle bin as well.

Thank you for your response fermiparadox: I had checked the trash and temporary items without success before consulting this forum.
Are there other possibilities to explore?

Hello,

You could perform a search by registration date. It may have been moved.

I hope you find it.

Hello White Curtain,
Shortly after posting my request, I undertook a thorough search of all my files on the desktop (and God knows there are many), regardless of what they are supposed to contain. After a certain amount of time (which was quite lengthy), I found my file in a folder titled "to sort"! But why was it untraceable? How did being initially alone on the desktop and then being placed in a folder on the desktop make it impossible to find? It remains a mystery to me. My conclusion is that a file that is untraceable by the system does not mean it cannot be found "manually".
So as you suspected, the file had been moved, probably by me in a well-intentioned effort to organize, but without my memory registering that action. In any case, thank you for your response.

"Untraceable" in this context means solely that it is not in the indicated location. The system does not search for it elsewhere.
It is therefore logical that a moved file is "untraceable."

From now on, I will know.
Thank you for your reply

What do you mean by "saved on the desktop"? In principle, Word working files are saved in "My Documents," which is their logical place.

What is logical is not necessarily what we do. I have a (bad, no doubt) habit of leaving the document I’m working on on my desk, just like in the real world, by the way.
Thank you for this comment, Eugène.

Hello, I have the same problem. Are you using Microsoft Office 2007? Because apparently it's no longer usable. I don't know how to recover certain Excel or Word files that are missing! They have neither been deleted, nor renamed, nor moved. I'm afraid to close the open files or shut down my computer, of course... Thank you for your help.

Hello Leali,
I am not on 2007 which should still work without new updates, but on 2010, which shouldn't change the problem. If you read my response to Rideau Blanc, you'll see that I found my file that I had moved without remembering.
I have no computer skills, so I can't advise you on anything. Given the fear that is within you, if I were in your place, I would put all my folders-files that can be found on an external hard drive, and once that's done, I would restart and then do a systematic manual search.
Good luck.

Thank you for your responses. In fact, the problem comes from 2007, which is no longer in service! Yesterday, I couldn't save my latest changes to an Excel file; of course, I save on the hard drive, but if the problem is with the system, then the problem remains the same since it's the same system that manages my hard drive, lol... I would need to acquire a new Office, maybe 2010? But it's not free! Any ideas? Oh, I don't want Open Office (it's too bad) thanks again.
I forgot to include the error message: unable to open this file because it is corrupted.
And also yesterday: Deleted records: Named range in the /xl/workbook.bin part (Workbook)

It's quite complicated and expensive if you want to avoid this kind of problem! Good luck anyway.

Hello

Yes, it seems to have happened to me too

And by restarting Word, you can find the most recently used files in the File menu of Word.

Otherwise, I recommend switching to LibreOffice where you can use the Word format.

Thank you

Hello Sub13,
That's what I initially did without success: it seems that under certain circumstances, the system is unable to locate a moved file.
Anyway, thank you for your reply.
