Hello
I have a bothersome problem with my Surface Pro 3... I had to reinstall Windows 8.1 Pro... and since then, the "Cover" keyboard is not working, doesn't exist, is not recognized...
-- The touchscreen and the on-screen keyboard work...
-- I managed to get a WiFi mouse working through the USB port and a Bluetooth keyboard (Lidl) and that works fine... but the real keyboard with its pad would be better
... I disconnected it, cleaned it, reconnected it in different ways, nothing works... All updates...
What should I do?? How to do it?? What should I download, install??
Thanks in advance to everyone.

I'm responding with the keyboard of my Surface :-)
For Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10
Uninstallation:
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers
right-click on "Surface Type Cover"
properties
tab "hardware"
For each line:
click "properties"
click "change settings"
tab "driver"
click "uninstall device"
if it offers to delete or uninstall the driver, say "yes" (delete/uninstall everything)
(Warning, the box listing the "hardware" associated with the keyboard is not updated after each uninstallation. So move on to the next one even if the previous one is still displayed)
When all lines in the "hardware" box are uninstalled, we move on to reinstalling the drivers:
Device Manager
In the top bar, click on the icon with a magnifying glass on a screen (for me, it's the last one on the right)
and Windows does everything by itself, it detects that the keyboard doesn't have the drivers and installs them.
And there you go :-)

Hello,
I have exactly the same issue as you on my Surface Pro 3, except that I had never upgraded to Windows 10.
Suddenly, my Type Cover keyboard stopped working. Since we had bought a spare one in case the one we had broke, I replaced it. However, the new keyboard didn't work either!
After extensive research online, it turns out that we are actually hundreds/thousands of users around the world experiencing this problem. Microsoft has put up a support page... but it is completely useless as it doesn't resolve the issue.
Microsoft is disregarding its customers because no solution is being offered even though this malfunction is clearly identified and stems from a software problem and not a hardware failure.

Indeed, I'm also wondering about that... Could my keyboard be physically faulty...?
However, it is true that it was working fine under Windows 8.1 and after the update, suddenly it stopped working... In this hypothesis, I even made a backup disk beforehand, under Win 8.1... I tried to restore it... and it doesn't work any better... It's completely unresponsive, not even when accessing the BIOS, it doesn't work at all...
Of course, with an external USB keyboard and mouse, it works, but it's no longer a laptop...
In my opinion, there's something else we don't know (and Microsoft isn't being cooperative). There must be some firmware lurking somewhere; either they no longer exist, or the link that activates them is no longer functional...
I've done everything Microsoft recommends on the web, downloaded the XYZ versions and installed for hours... But it still doesn't work
I've also noticed that online there are thousands of people with the same problem... and that's not reassuring.

Oh yes... and so what?? How is all this going to end? In the trash, because we can't use it... It's still a pretty sad story... Shamefully disgraceful on the part of Microsoft at least.
To avoid reaching these extremes, it should be able to be restarted... but how, with what??
Or does it become just a simple tablet?? But a tablet running Windows, with big fingers for the touchscreen, that's not really it either...

Good news... it's a big day. I found the solution (it worked right away for me anyway).
You need to uninstall all the hardware and drivers associated with the keyboard... but go through the control panel

Behind the little nipples there are springs. They need to be pushed out as much as possible so that the tablet is in contact with the keyboard; otherwise, the USB device is not recognized. I then removed and reinserted the keyboard several times.

No matter how much I pull on the nipples, it doesn't seem to excite her any more...!
I looked closely and measured the distances and depth, the mechanical contact is well established, I even filed down the neighboring bumps slightly to free up some depth; nothing works.
I also reset Windows... nothing's better... I must be one of the victims.

I'm sorry, I don't have a miraculous answer... I can't do it... Not at all... Not a bit...
I admit I've spent quite a bit of time on it and I've kind of let it go... otherwise, I'll be at it all year... Although... with the lockdown..??
Let's say I try again when I have new info that I haven't tried yet...
To me, this beast has something secret and hidden... that would allow the keyboard to work... I don't understand where it's tucked away... and especially that Microsoft isn't being helpful on this... It's a total lack of cooperation... their site with downloadable solutions doesn't change anything, or it's missing huge explanations... I can admit a lack of intelligence.. But there are millions of us in this situation..
And this keyboard should work outside of Windows, just by entering the BIOS.. that's not the case already...
You will always be welcome...

Hello Yan,
In my device manager, I only have one keyboard listed as "PIH Keyboard"
Could you let me know if it's the same for you... or if you have two lines, one for the physical keyboard and the other for the "Touch Keyboard"...?? And I believe that HID is the same thing.
Moreover, could you check your Keyboard.inf file (in \Windows\inf\) and possibly send me a copy..?? Because while browsing mine, I am very surprised not to find the identification number of my keyboard (VEN_MSHW&DEV_0029...)
I am also surprised that these drivers are from 2006..??

Hello,
It seems to me that you have a hardware issue, different from the software problem I had.
In my device manager, I have 2 keyboard lines: "PIH Keyboard" and "Surface type cover filter device."
Just so you know, I already had the "Surface type cover filter device" listed in the manager even when it wasn't working...
If you want screenshots or config files, give me an address to send them to.
Good luck.

It's very possible... because when I remove my "Type Cover" keyboard and then replace it, I don't see the new line for this device appearing in the "Device Manager".... Whereas with an external keyboard that I connect via USB, that line appears almost immediately upon connection or disappears upon disconnection...
This suggests that my keyboard is not detected at all... Strange, all of a sudden...
So... I'm currently reverting it to the original Windows 8.1 and it's going through the subsequent updates...
I also installed Linux Ubuntu 20.4 on it... it works (without Cover or Touch) but it also doesn't detect the presence of my Cover keyboard...!
I thank you for any screenshots or files, but are you now on Windows 10..??
For file and photo exchanges, I usually use the site "cjoint.com" or "WeTransfer" https://wetransfer.com/ and then I send the link to my contact via PM (private message)
But you're not registered on the CCM Forum, so I can't send you a private message... and I think it's the same the other way around... But anyway, I'll think about the question.

Good evening,
I have exactly the same problem as you...
My keyboard is no longer working and I can't find it in the device manager...
I called Microsoft support about ten days ago, they first brushed me off by saying they no longer supported Surface 3 and that the problem must be hardware-related... After insisting a bit, the girl performed a Windows 10 repair and it worked!!!
Yesterday, here we go again, my keyboard is not working anymore!! I called again today and they really dismissed me, I got the same spiel as last time and the guy still initiated a reinstallation and hung up.... The reinstallation did not resolve the problem...
In my opinion, planned obsolescence, Microsoft is rolling out updates that crash the keyboard!!!
I'm so frustrated....

Oh yes.. What to do to change things..?? Time is passing and soon they will say it's obsolete...
Obsolescence is an American invention, around 1930, to boost the economy by creating consumption... then other concepts came along like fashion, decor... then age... Then programming came along, and I believe that "Surface" is one application of this...
Mine still doesn't work..

Hello,
I’m searching on forums for how to solve my problem with the Surface Pro 3 keyboard not being recognized. Like you, I only have one line "Clavier PIH" and not "Surface type cover filter device" in the device manager. I’ve tried restorations, updates,...still no keyboard. Have you found a solution? I have new keyboards so there are no hardware issues.
Thank you for your response.

Hello everyone,
My question doesn't seem to be causing a stir...!
There must be some of you with "Surface" devices and the famous "Cover Touch" keyboard.
What I'm particularly interested in is the implementation of this keyboard, the drivers or firmware used... I believe it's the same on Windows 10 in this regard.
-- I'm especially thinking of those who only purchased the tablet initially... And who later equipped it with this "Cover" keyboard... How did they go about installing it??
Thanks for all your cooperation.

In fact, I recharged SURFACE on Windows 10 according to Microsoft... and I still don't have the "Cover" keyboard.
So my question remains... How to activate this damn keyboard??
But now, it's under Windows 10 that this continues.
Thank you in advance.

Precision that matters:
This famous "COVER" keyboard also doesn't work if we go into the BIOS/UEFI...
So it's not a driver issue in Windows or a setting... NO
I believe I understood from an external reading that there are "FIRMWAREs" in this type of PC, three or four firmwares in Nand memory... One of which is dedicated to making the external keyboard work... I don't know more than that.
However, if I plug in a real keyboard and a (wired) mouse into the USB port, they work just fine even in BIOS/UEFI access
If anyone knows a bit more about the firmware in question, they will be welcome..

Yes, I believe there is something going on... because in your case, the keyboard shouldn't have had any bad contacts... it was just an update...
On my end, I've tried at least fifteen times to improve the keyboard contacts... but nothing works..
In my opinion, there is a corner of memory or a ROM that contains the firmware to make the keyboard function... But where, what, and how... Mystery..??
One question... When you go into the BIOS, does your keyboard work??
Because in that case, the PC is basic, there is no Windows running... and the keyboard doesn't work (for me)

Hello, this is not a software issue but a hardware one.
The keyboard is a peripheral and it is no longer recognized. Check that all the connection pins are properly extended. Then remove and replace the keyboard several times until the keyboard is recognized.

Thank you for your interest.
Yes, it might be possible.. But I have already checked all that, measured the depth, carefully verified that there is enough travel to press properly when popping out, etc...
And it stopped working after the replacement of Windows 8, it’s quite a funny coincidence...
And indeed, it’s not specifically Windows because it doesn’t work even with the BIOS right from the start...
Personally: I imagine there is some kind of non-volatile memory (NAND or ROM) that contains small firmware for this and it has been erased or something like that... but that’s just my assumption...
If you could explain to me precisely what needs to be done to ensure that the contacts are properly made, I am ready to listen and apply...
Thanks in advance

Hello,
Have you found a solution?
I have tried all possible manipulations and I still have the same problem and I can't solve it.
Thank you for your response please.

I found the menus... sorry.
But every time I update through Windows, it tells me that the latest driver is already installed...
And I feel like nothing changes, or it just reinstalls the same one??

You need to uninstall all the hardware and drivers associated with the keyboard... but go through the control panel.
Once everything is uninstalled, you should go to the device manager and initiate a search for new hardware, and it will reinstall everything.
I didn't even need to restart. The keyboard worked right away.

Yes, I saw all that, except... how do you do the "Search for new hardware"..??
Is it global... or do you have to do it on each device..??
And how do you know how to identify "All the hardware and drivers associated with the keyboard"..??

It's true that testing it on another would raise more doubts... but I can't find anyone with a PC like that... Too bad...
-- That said, I don't believe it much... because it was working on Windows 8.1 a few months ago... It's when I upgraded to Windows 10 that it stopped working, immediately.. and I don't believe that this keyboard became faulty as a result...
-- I'm not giving up, but I've already spent a lot of time on this, I think it's going to go back on the shelf for a while..!
-- If I plug in a mouse and a keyboard via USB, it works, but it's no longer a laptop.
-- Could you take a screenshot of the "Device Manager", expanded at the keyboard level..? Upload it to the "cjoint.com" site and give the link here.

Hello,
For my part, I had bought a new keyboard at one point, anticipating a possible breakage or an accident with my children.
When I thought the keyboard had failed, I naturally grabbed the new one to plug into the Surface, but it didn’t work either. Despite several complete resets of Windows 8, neither keyboard worked.

No trigger identified. I had never updated to Windows 10, the keyboard was working perfectly the day before. I just let the usual updates run, as usual, and upon restarting it no longer worked.
I have had the Surface Pro 3 for about four years, I believe.
I have done all the manipulations suggested online, and nothing works. Fortunately, this second keyboard allowed me to see that the problem was not hardware but indeed software.

Hello,
I got the Surface Pro 3 running with Linux Ubuntu 20.4, which is very recent and modern...
And it doesn't detect the Keyboard in the PCI...
Either the keyboard is dead... ?? or the contacts are not making... ?? or a faulty or missing firmware is preventing its detection...
By the way, how does this Keyboard work in transmission with the tablet... Bluetooth, I don't think so... Serial connection with 4 wires... or I2C bus... or something else...
I saw a "Wacom" that seems to operate on the same principles... Could it be a Wacom Cover keyboard?? because they seem to be more talkative...

I also searched for a long time before finding the solution.
Have a good evening.
PS. Jeannets, I'll reply to you tomorrow.
