My trash bin empties itself. Solved

Hello, I have a problem that has been going on for a while: my email trash is emptying itself, emails are disappearing even though the option is not checked: I needed to refer back to an email that has disappeared; does anyone have an idea? I can't find anything in the options, except for this checkbox "empty the deleted items folder" at every logout; but the box is not checked, so the trash shouldn't be emptying!! Help please! Thanks;    Configuration: Windows / Firefox 69.0

Hello,  Indeed, if the box that says to empty the trash at each logout is not checked, then there might have been an intrusion into your email account.  The intrusion can be facilitated if:  - someone else is using your smartphone - your session is not logged out on your computer and someone else returns to it - someone knows your password (keylogger, Trojan horse)  I suggest doing an antimalware scan (make sure to update the database) and above all, I recommend changing your password.  Better yet, I advise you to enable two-factor authentication and keep your secret key safe.  Multi-factor authentication is on the way; sooner or later, we will all adopt it.  Regards

Hello maryleg,  One possible cause (to check) is that if the account is set up as IMAP in the software and the Internet service provider has a rule stating that the account's trash is emptied on the server after 7 days, as is the case with Orange, for example, then due to the synchronization inherent to the IMAP protocol, it will also be automatically emptied at the same time in the software.  A trash bin is not meant to store emails indefinitely. It's like at home: the cleaner empties it every week!

Hello maryleg,  Any account can be set up as POP instead of IMAP in a mail client, including an Orange account.  This POP protocol only retrieves received messages, without syncing other folders with the server. If this type of operation works for you, why not?  But since it's not possible to change an account from IMAP to POP simply by changing a setting, you need to set up the same account again in the client, but as POP, then move messages from one account to the other before deleting the IMAP account.
