Hello,
I want to add an additional RAM stick to my computer, which is an ASUS K551LN-XO551H. When I ran tests on CPU-Z, it displayed it as an ASUS S551LN but didn't show the number of available slots or the one that is already occupied. I found online that the S551LN has a capacity of 2 slots for a maximum support of 12GB. On the Crucial website, I found these two different RAM options:
https://www.crucial.fr/
https://www.crucial.fr/

Can you help me figure out which type of RAM would be compatible with my PC?
What is the difference between the two Crucial RAM options?
Is it good for the computer to add 8GB of RAM in addition to the 4GB? I have often been told that it is preferable to choose RAM sticks of identical sizes?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Valentin.

Hello,
post a screenshot of the memory and SPD tab (which corresponds to the RAM slots) unless there's nothing in it.
It’s normal for CPU-Z to show S551LN; the model doesn't always correspond to the motherboard (at least with Asus, and it's very stupid on their part).

The differences between the two modules are the frequency and the timing; on Asus's specs, it states DDR3L 1600 (which is the second one).

I'm looking to see the RAM slots.
Yes, it's recommended to use identical modules for dual channel, which boosts performance; I don't think you really need 12GB of RAM, especially since for most games, 8GB is sufficient.

It seems that you only have one slot (we'll see if the SPD CPU-Z displays something or not),
manual: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/S551LN/040C_F8632_A.pdf

I think you have 4GB integrated and 1 free slot.

Hello, thank you for your quick response. I am attaching the screenshots of the memory and SPD tabs; unfortunately, the SPD tab shows nothing at all. Is the second DDR3 the most recommended then? I saw online that this model only has one free slot and that the motherboard can only handle a maximum of 12GB.
I don't specifically need to upgrade for gaming, but mainly for resource-intensive software in general. I suspect that 12GB is a bit unnecessary, but I wanted to get some opinions.
To do it properly, I need to find a DDR3 of 4GB (or 8GB) with what frequency? And how do I switch from single to dual channel?

Thank you.

you would need DDR3L 1600MHz CL11
you can use either the 8GB from Crucial or a 4GB one.
to run in dual channel it should work with a 4GB, I don't know if it will work with the 8GB
the memory modules provided by the manufacturer (like Asus, for example) can run in dual channel with different sizes, I don't know if it will run dual channel with the 8GB, but if you need 12GB, go for it

you can also use these two:

Hello, thank you for your response and the various links.
I’m attaching a photo of the RAM slot just in case.
Can you tell me what the benefit of switching to dual channel is? Is it more interesting to prioritize dual channel or the amount of RAM? What do you think is the most prudent option?

Thank you.

It depends on your needs; if you need more or less RAM. In most cases, 8GB is sufficient, and when you add more, it's generally for gaming, video editing, or certain software that consumes RAM.
After that, you probably won't notice a difference between single and dual channel.

It's mainly for applications like Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Da Vinci Resolve, ...
