Update redirects and image disappearance

Hello,

While updating the references in my Word document (over 500 pages), I notice that the images I inserted are disappearing and I get this error message with a little red x on the right: "Cannot display the linked image. The file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Check that the link points to the correct file and location." Can someone tell me how to update only the references?
I hope I won't have to spend a day or two redoing all my references one by one!
Thank you.

Configuration: Windows / Firefox 59.0

Hello
I don't think there is a method for that.
That's the whole problem with linked images; at the slightest change in location or name, nothing works anymore.
The best thing is to integrate them into the document while making sure to reduce the size (if you're using Office 2010 or later, there is a function for that).

Best regards

Thank you madmyke.
I'm going to stop looking and resign myself to spending hours changing the references one at a time.
If I had a way to unlink or dissociate the images, that would be great. I actually wonder how come my images are linked to I don't know what!

If you start linking your images the same way, they will disappear again... Instead, follow the advice of madmyke!

Your images are linked because instead of doing INSERTION/Illustrations/Images/
you might have done INSERTION/Text/Object/Create from file/ with the added option "Link to file"...

This response clarifies things for me... even though I don't think I checked the link to the file option.
I ended up updating the references one by one.
I'm not going to start inserting the fifty images that I also need to position correctly, which is quite time-consuming in Word!
But I will know and will do it for the next edition of my document.
THANK YOU madmyke and Raymond PENTIER for the good leads!

Hello,

I'm afraid it seems to be a corrupted document.

To check if the images are linked, it's not complicated: File tab and in the info => Edit links to files.
If this command is not there, then there are no links...

Try the following:
Make a copy of the document, and in this copy change the DOCX extension to ZIP. Open the zip. In the zip, open the Word folder, then the media folder. Are your images there?

Thank you three. I’m pretty much in a hurry these days and I’ve updated my references one by one. I will still do what you proposed, check the links and eliminate them. I’ll give you an update when I have a bit of time.

So, we must hope that your file is not intended to be moved to another medium, or sent by email...

It has been converted to PDF without any issues and is now at the printer ;-) It's a course manual. It needed to be printed before the school year starts (early September in Quebec). I'll do better in the next edition with your valuable advice. I'm keeping my fingers crossed while waiting for the pre-press. I know, I know: a book is not supposed to be edited in Word converted to PDF! My graphic designer friends are falling off their chairs. But I've been doing it without too much trouble for four years. The result is excellent and it's really more practical for making changes in the content of the 500 pages, without depending on anyone (which I do every year; this is the first time I've had issues with updating my references, probably due to a mistake in inserting the graphic elements). One day, I'll switch to InDesign...
Thank you again!
