Issue with updating cross-references in Word

Hello!

I'm working on a relatively heavy document (300 pages) that contains many references to paragraph numbers.

I can no longer update the references. When I use the F9 key, all the reference fields display "0", but they still link to the correct place when clicked while holding Ctrl.

What should I do?

Have I reached the limits of Word?...

    Hello,

    Try selecting one of your references and, if this function is available, right-click the mouse: "update fields."
    Otherwise, try going through the print preview and see if your references have reverted to their original number.
    Or check in the Tools, under Options/Printing if you have checked "Update fields."

    Thank you very much for your response.

    My references are in footnotes and, apparently, the "update fields" function is not available in footnotes. I also noticed that other functions are not available when inserting a reference in a footnote (for example, the function that allows you to automatically insert "above" or "below").

    Otherwise, I always get "0" as the value of my references when I go through the print preview. This action does not resolve the problem.

    I should add here that, as I mentioned in my first message, all the fields of the references display "0", but they still link correctly when clicked while holding "Ctrl". The references do exist, but there seems to be a display issue...

    Furthermore, in the Tools, under Options/Print, the "Update fields" box is checked.

    Finally, I was wondering if there is a simple way to have the paragraph numbers appear in the outer margin of the page (left margin on the left page, right margin on the right page). To achieve this result, I had to place a frame around each paragraph with an automatic numbering field inside. It is indeed possible to set up frames to appear in the outer margin of the page. But since my reference issues arose after inserting these frames, I wonder if my document is becoming too complex for Word's capabilities...

    It is quite possible that the problem comes from the frames. Are they made by text boxes? It is better to go through the frames, but that’s what I read somewhere without experiencing it myself.

    So, I suggest you only create a frame without a text box. You can achieve the same result, just click on the frame and then go to Drawing/Order/Text above.

    To have the option to specify near the reference the annotation below/above, you need to go to references/numbered items-paragraph number, but that's probably what you did and it's no longer available?
