Hello,
In a thesis of about 570 pages, I inserted references to footnotes in Word 2007 following this procedure:
-References, cross-reference, category: footnotes, Insert reference to: formatted footnote number.
The references are inserted very well, but I cannot update them automatically (the ALT + F9 maneuver does not work).
I cannot update them one by one as I have about thirty spread over the 570 pages. Moreover, the numbering of the footnote call for each of these references changes with each renumbering (insertion of an index, table of contents, etc.).
Is there a function that can update all these references at the same time (other than before printing, as I also need to create an electronic file that will not be printed)? I also clarify that I do not handle programming languages or macros well.
Thank you for your responses.

Good evening
Alt+F9 is used to show or hide field codes
To update, it's F9. After selecting everything

Hello,
Unfortunately, it only works for a few redirects but not all of them. I'm open to another solution, if it exists.
Thank you in advance.

I just had the same problem and I have the solution (in Word 2013).
Actually, both are right:
ctrl+A only selects the body of the document and not the footnotes. Hence, F9 does not update those fields.
If you click first on one of those footnotes, ctrl+A selects all the footnotes (and nothing but them). Then F9 updates them.

Hello,
Thank you for your advice, but my problem is still not resolved! :-(
All these references are footnote references. The ALT+A+F9 function only updates 14 references out of the 27 present in the document. On the other hand, each reference updates without issue when I click on it (right-click + update fields). But I can't keep doing this every time I repaginate in Word!!
