Hello,

my Sony brand PC has a problem. It has an issue with the hard drive (500GB). To avoid losing all my data, I decided to replace the drive by cloning. I got the Seagate Barracuda 1TB. I connect it with a SATA to USB 3.0 cable and it is recognized. I use the Easeus Todo Backup software, I clone the disk but when I start the cloning, it stays stuck at "initializing cloning, please wait". I left it all night and in the morning it was still at initialization. I tell myself that maybe the software wasn’t working, so I used another software named HDClone. The cloning started, it lasted about 4~5 hours and it says that the cloning is finished. I replace the hard drive with the new one and there is "Operating System Not Found", I try to go into the BIOS to change on which HDD the computer should boot and still the same problem. I also tried the Easeus Partition Master and Shadow Copy software, unfortunately without success. I have tried cloning several times but there are always failures. I am really desperate, please help me !!!
Thank you in advance

Hello,
there is cloning and cloning.
that is, if the software only does a "copy/paste" of the disk, the boot system of the operating system is not taken into account (usually done in the free versions of software). in this case it can be repaired via a Windows DaRT or via a Windows installer > repair the computer. The automatic repair system should be able to fix the "operating system not found" problem. (there are the commands "bootrec /fixmbr" and "bootrec /fixboot" which can be typed in cmd (still via DaRT), but I don't know if that works for this)

I had the same problem, hoping that it may work for you too

Could you explain it to me step by step? I’m terrible at computers.
Thanks in advance

I would need to know your Windows version (7-8-10); whether your system is 64-bit or 32-bit, which can be seen in Settings > System, or Control Panel > System. If you have Windows 8 or 10, was it pre-installed at the time of purchase of the computer?

Sorry for the delay.
Windows 8.1 64-bit
At purchase it was Windows 8 and I upgraded to 8.1.
I managed to clone with Aoemi Backup but when I start up, error 0xc0000225 appears

Okay, now the old disk doesn’t work anymore, it boots but Windows doesn’t start, so I decided to reset. I’m going to lose all my data but I just want my PC to work.

Hello,

if your original hard drive no longer boots Windows, you can connect it externally to a PC and explore it like an external drive and recover your data.
For cloning it might not have been a good idea because we didn’t know the exact underlying problem.
A clone is a clone, it also clones the errors.

--------------------------------------------
At this stage the best would be to /

> recover your data by connecting your hard drive externally to another PC (you seem equipped for it)

> While you’re at it, test your old disk to see if it’s really dead or not.

You unzip the downloaded folder then run the x64 file and see the result.

> We reinstall Windows 8.1 cleanly on the new hard drive
(Only after, knowing that Windows 10 can still be free depending on the method, it would be nice if you go for it, right ?)

> Your Windows is on a clean slate
you put back your documents and software

Basic idea, to be explored and detailed according to your choice.

So, as I had already cloned the old HDD onto the new one, I was able to recover all my data. On the old one I had reset it, so I’m transferring the data back onto the old one. Then I decided to change the HDD because I had already downloaded CrystalDisk and it said the disk health was bad. To install Windows 8.1 on the new HDD, do I have to pay? I don’t see how I can put Windows 8.1 on the new one. Also I don’t want to put Windows 10 back on because I had already upgraded to 10 but everything started to snow (buzzing?) so I preferred to stay with 8.

But then I have an idea: if I put the Windows 8 ISO image on a USB drive and install it on the new drive, could I use the activation key from the old Windows?

Is Windows 10 free? If I download an image of 10, will I need a key?

If you have already installed Windows 10 on your PC, we can reinstall it and it will activate automatically. (license key stored on the PC’s motherboard) Same for Windows 8, but I know their activation system a bit less well (you might need to enter the license key if you have it) What’s your PC model? Initially with Windows 8 I’d say it should run without issues with Windows 10, which I’m recommending here. ---------------------- " I was able to recover all my data. ........ I’m in the process of transferring the data to the old one" Not logical to put data on a hard drive that is near the end of its life, you risk losing them.

Actually, it's good, I managed to install Windows 8.1 on the new HDD with a USB key. And I moved the data from the old HDD so I could put it on the new one. During the installation I didn't have to enter the activation key. So it's all good. Thank you very much for your help. I’ll be able to mark this forum as resolved. Thanks again!!!!
