Windows Vista Installation Completed Issue

Hello,
As the owner of a new PC that I had assembled, I'm having trouble installing Windows Vista on it. Everything goes fine until the "Finishing Installation" step, where my PC gets stuck. The hard drive indicator light is flickering regularly, but nothing happens (as if it can't write to the HDD...). The same issue occurs with Windows XP. It might be a configuration problem.
I should mention that this is the OEM version of Vista Home Premium.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
Configuration: Asus P5K motherboard Hitachi Deskstar 320 GB hard drive in SATA 2 GB of RAM 8800GTS graphics card

HELLO, I hope it's not too late. Try this:

1) Access the BIOS by pressing F2 when the computer starts
2) Go to the "Onboard Devices" tab
3) Go to the "Flash Cache Module" tab and disable the option
4) Go to the "SATA Operation" tab and change from "AHCI" to "ATA" or to COMPATIBLE on some BIOS
5) Save the settings, restart the Windows installation, and you're good to go!

This should resolve the issue.

Hello jonaswinner,
Do I need to do the same thing because my computer stops at 27% of the file extraction?

Hi,

At what point does it freeze during the installation of XP?

Same. It installs everything and gets to "saving your settings" and then it freezes. It's XP Pro (just specifying in case it helps).

remove 1 memory out of 2 and change the remaining one to slot. Then try it like that XP.

It's either the memory or the hard drive that is failing.

It's not XP or Vista

First of all, thank you for your help.
I will try your solution. The memory test under Vista worked. However, I’m not very confident about the hard drive. I will keep you updated.

Well, I don’t know if it’s due to the low-level formatting I did or the rearrangement of the RAM sticks, but in any case, the installation of XP worked this time! I’m moving on to the installation of Vista to make sure it’s not just a clever trick...

Thank you again for the help you provided me!

Well, after reinstalling Vista over XP, everything went the same way as the first time (because I had already installed Vista at the beginning but it crashed every 10 minutes or so...).

So now it's crashing every 10 minutes (that is, a violent screen freeze) or displaying an error message on a blue screen... (in English it asks me to test the memory, etc... then a countdown to 100 and it restarts...
I really don't know what to think or what to do because I can't see where it could come from (drivers, faulty hardware, system...)

I'm going back to XP hoping it will be more stable and reliable...

If you have a solution, please let me know.

your memories are defective, change them.

run a memtest while you're at it

Well, it's the same under XP, so the cause must be hardware-related. Is it possible to exchange the memory anywhere knowing that it's Corsair and comes with a lifetime warranty? Or do I have to go through the manufacturer and send it back? And is it definitely the memory that is causing the problem?

In any case, I thank you for your insightful and effective responses! It's really nice of you to take care of my issue!

very strong chance it's coming from the memory. Take them back to where you bought them! And if possible, get a different reference or brand.

Okay. I'll do that and keep you updated. I will also test directly with RAM sticks from another brand to verify

Thanks again

Well, I tested the two sticks independently: with one I get to Windows and then crash on the desktop, and with the other I crash before... Does that mean that both sticks are "damaged"?

The 2 sticks,
Or the slots on the motherboard (have you tried the others?)
Or an incompatibility between the RAM and the motherboard -> need to change it

So I ran the memtest and the program doesn't detect any errors... on any of the sticks (I tested the sticks independently...). So I suggest it's more of an incompatibility between the RAM and the motherboard, but that surprises me: how could I check that?

I'm testing with two different sticks this afternoon and I'll let you know

Thanks again for your attentive support

Yes, testing with others ;)

I'll only be there on Sunday evening or Monday morning. I have to take the train in a few hours, I just got a call (my girlfriend lol, oh girls...)

Good luck

LOL, I totally understand! Have a good weekend, and I'll keep you updated. But I think that if I don't get better results with the other RAM sticks, it will go back to customer support by Monday...

Well, after several rather relevant tests, I can affirm that the problem does not come from the RAM sticks but indeed from the motherboard! Indeed, the last two RAM slots are surely damaged since as soon as a RAM stick is inserted, I crash within 10 minutes (or even less)! However, the PC works fine with the sticks placed in the first two slots! The problem is therefore solved; I just have to return the motherboard...

Hi

There is still a slim chance that it could be the motherboard.

Since you have 4 slots, I assume that if you put RAM in slots 1 and 2, you get 2GB for example, but you won't have dual channel! So it doesn't crash. However, if you put RAM in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, you activate dual channel and it crashes. So I would say either the motherboard is defective and crashes as soon as you use dual channel, or it is not compatible with this RAM in dual channel.

However, if it crashes with just one stick, then it is definitely the motherboard that is faulty!

Well, let me know how it goes and what customer service says, and if your PC works again after that ;)

In any case, this confirms what I thought: either the RAM or the slots

See you

Well, there you go, an afternoon without crashes with the 2 sticks in the first 2 slots without dual channel indeed... I’ll check all this with LDLC customer service tomorrow... In any case, thank you for your invaluable help because without you I probably wouldn’t have looked into that side of things!

I’ll keep you updated on the progress!

Talk to you later!

hi

No problem ;)

Is your memory no-name?

By the way, if you go to the manufacturer's website for your motherboard, you can download a PDF with models of memory tested and certified compatible with it in dual channel:

http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5K/P5K_QVL.pdf

That way you can be sure it works ;)

And be careful not to buy no-name products, always go for brands

Hi
No, my memory is Corsair so I think I can trust it lol. But I'll take a look at that PDF.

Thanks again

See you later.

from Corsair, but the Corsair VALUE?

Because Corsair has also ventured into the entry-level market with their Value model.

Precisely, it's the CORSAIR TWINX DDR2 XMS 2x1024 PC 6400
Here is the link: https://www.ldlc.com/informatique/pieces-informatique/memoire-pc/c4703/
