Hello,
I have an Asus A6va laptop that was working perfectly until my return from vacation. But when I tried to turn it on a few days ago, the screen remained black during startup, except occasionally when everything goes normally. However, the fan is running, the hard drive starts up, etc.
It doesn't seem to be a screen issue because when I connect an external monitor, it also stays black. Occasionally, the startup goes smoothly and everything works.
Would a brilliant mind have a solution to propose?
Thank you in advance
Yann

So, my problem was with an Asus running Windows 8, and after an update, I found myself with a black screen and just the mouse cursor appearing. Firstly, in 95% of cases, the problem stems from the graphics driver. The update caused it to crash. The goal is to access the computer in safe mode, uninstall the graphics driver, restart in safe mode, and reinstall a new driver that can be easily found by typing the model of your driver + "driver" into Google.
So, since in Windows 8 we cannot restart in safe mode with F8 or anything else, the solution is as follows.
- Restart the computer and repeatedly press the F9 key as it starts, until the large blue Windows logo appears. You have already passed the first step. From there, you will be able to access the advanced startup.
Once there, go to Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Startup Settings, and then click Restart. When the computer restarts, it will display a list of options, the 4th of which is safe mode. You press 4 on your keyboard, and the computer will start in safe mode. You’re almost there if you manage to start the computer in safe mode.
From there, go to Device Manager, click on Graphics Card, the name of the driver will be displayed, and at the top, there's a small icon to uninstall the driver. Don't hesitate and uninstall it.
Then, it will prompt you to restart the computer, you will repeat the process with F9 several times again, and then follow all the steps to access safe mode. In the meantime, you will have taken the time to download the new driver for your graphics card via another computer or a friend, and you will simply install it when your computer has restarted in safe mode. Once installed, all you have to do is restart your computer in normal mode without touching anything, and it works! Miracle! :)
There you go, hoping that this information can help some of you. Because I struggled for hours to find these steps... Alone :(
PS: I had made sure to disable Avast via the Task Manager which was accessible at the black screen level (ctrl+alt+del), but I don't think that's necessary for the process to work...
