Toshiba Satellite, black screen on startup Solved

Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite L850 laptop. I have had an issue for 2 weeks now, the screen stays black at startup. At first, I would sometimes get lucky and the display would come back. Now, for the past 3 days, I always have a black screen, but the computer works. Could the screen be out of order?

A big THANK YOU to Protecta for its "tip" which is VERY effective: 1/turn off the phone, 2/remove the battery, 3/press the POWER button for 20', 4/at the same time press 5 times on the DELETE button, 5/plug it into the power outlet and turn it on (without the battery) and it works... HOORAY!!! because all my anxieties are gone after a great despair with this BLACK SCREEN on a Toshiba satellite computer only 1 year and a half old, barely.. GRuiiiiikkkk. I hope I won’t have an unwelcome return of this """"black screen of doom""" and after two restarts everything is FINE!!! Thanks again to Protecta for its sharing... from 2013 but still relevant... I'm bumping the topic, I have updates..

I called Toshiba's customer service, and they asked me to do a procedure: turn off the laptop if it's on, remove the battery, hold the power button for 20 seconds, then press the "delete" key five times, which is above the "enter" key, and finally plug the laptop into the wall outlet (without the battery) and then turn it on. It didn't work over the phone. I tried again last night, my laptop turned on, and the date remained set to March 17, which is around the time my issues began.

I don't understand anything at all, I'm currently writing from this laptop. The only problem is that I turned it off last night, and this morning it was the same thing: black screen. I did the procedure again, and the computer and screen started up.

Oh, also important! At startup yesterday, my computer tried to install a driver (apparently) via Windows Device Manager or something like that, but it apparently failed. In the event viewer, it said that this service was delayed by about 2500 seconds (more than half an hour). The hard drive was running at 100% for the entire duration of use (about 3 hours). This morning the hard drive is running normally. It also indicated an error in system files, but I don’t know how to find that message again. I have a strong feeling that my problem doesn't stem from the hardware itself.

Do you have any suggestions? In parallel, I will call customer service again to see what they suggest. Thank you for your help.

Hi,

I had the same issue with a new PC; moving the lid or using another screen makes the display work.
If that's the case, it might be a problem with the lid's sleep sensor management.

Toshiba released a new version of the BIOS (which dates back to 01/2014 or 05/2014 depending on the model)
and with the new update, the problem is resolved.

Before replacing parts on recent computers (motherboard, sensor, screen...), remember to update the hardware (motherboard, BIOS...) from the manufacturer's website.
