Black screen on startup (laptop) Solved

Hello,

I'm posting this message on another PC because my main laptop just crashed right now :/

So let me explain what happened. Everything was working fine, I put my laptop in sleep mode for about 1.5 hours, I wake it up and the screen is completely black with the fans running at full speed or almost, then nothing displays.

I waited 30 seconds, still black screen and the fans are still running very fast. I manually shut it down, turn it back on, the fans work normally, everything is running well except the screen is still black on startup, I can't access the BIOS, nothing at all!

I've tried running it without the battery, removing and reseating the hard drives, RAM sticks, and dusting it off, but still nothing.

I sniffed inside the laptop to see if it smelled burnt (if the graphics card had failed) or anything, but no, it doesn't smell like anything.

Also, when the laptop starts up, there are no error messages or beeping sounds.

For your information, my laptop is about 5 or 6 years old, so it's no longer under warranty.

That's it if you have a solution to my problem.... :) Otherwise, I have a hammer next to me (if there's no solution) :( lol

I had the same issue, I would turn it on, and the screen stayed black. Several solutions may work (or not) depending on the problem, I called a technician, and he told me:

to remove the battery and the charger,
to hold down the power button for thirty seconds (nothing will happen for sure),
once the thirty seconds are up, plug in the charger,
do not replace the battery
and press the power button to start.

For my problem, it worked.

If your motherboard were dead, I don't think it would even light up. When I talk about RAM, I'm referring to the stick, which is very easily replaceable and at a very reasonable price. You tell me it's about 5-6 years old, so I think it will cost you between 5 and 15 euros. If your processor is dead, forget about replacing it; buy another laptop but keep the hard drive.

Hello again!

Well, I think it’s more serious than I thought. I just removed the RAM sticks from the PC I'm using to write, luckily they are compatible with my dead PC.

So I put the RAM sticks in, I turn on the computer, I was expecting to see the screen light up, and it’s still the same... black screen.

To test it, I put the RAM sticks from the dead PC into this one, and it works fine, so it seems it's not the RAM sticks that are dead :x

Oh, and by the way, when I turn on the PC, my keyboard is frozen, I can’t do anything, the Num Lock key is off. Could it be that the screen is unsoldered? Because the sound isn’t working.

Video card problems are the most common cause of this issue.

Try the following troubleshooting procedures in the order they are presented. If the first procedure does not resolve the issue, move on to the next procedure.

Reinstall your video driver

Right-click on the taskbar, then click on Start Task Manager.

Select the Processes tab, click on explorer.exe, and then click on End Process.

Click on the File menu, then on New Task (Run).

In the Open text box, enter explorer.exe, then click OK.

Click on the Start button image, type device manager in the search box, and then in the search results, click on Device Manager.
Double-click on Display adapters, right-click on your display device, click on Update driver, and follow the steps in the wizard that appears.

Note

Check for issues in the Registry

Right-click on the taskbar, then click on Start Task Manager.

Click to select the WinLogon key, and then in the right pane, click on Shell. The value of Shell in the Data column should be explorer.exe. If the Shell value is not explorer.exe, double-click on Shell and then, in the Value data field, enter explorer.exe. Then click OK.

Close the Registry Editor, then restart your PC.

If this procedure has resolved the issue, you are done. If not, move on to the next procedure.

Start the computer in Safe Mode and run System Restore

Click on the Start button image, click the arrow next to Shut Down, and then select Restart.
Perform one of the following operations:

If only one operating system is installed on your computer, press and hold the F8 key during your computer's restart. You must press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, try again waiting for the Windows logon prompt to appear, then shutting down and restarting your computer.

If multiple operating systems are installed on your computer, use the arrow keys to select the operating system you want to start in Safe Mode, then press F8.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.

Log on to your computer with an account that has administrative rights. When your computer is in Safe Mode, you will see the words Safe Mode displayed in all four corners of your monitor.

Click on the Start button image, type "system restore" in the search field, click on System Restore, and then click Next. Administrator permission is required. If you are prompted to provide an administrator password or confirmation, provide the password or confirmation.
Choose a restore point when your PC was working as you wanted, click Next, and then click Finish.

Restart your computer normally.

If this procedure resolves the issue, you are done. If not, repeat this procedure but select an older restore point (if one exists). If this action still does not resolve the issue, contact your computer manufacturer or technical support for assistance.

Here's how I've solved the problem so far.
But first, I need to tell you this:
The cause of this problem is: PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE, which you can understand by searching for the explanation on Google.
I've had this black screen issue on my laptop for several weeks.
Up until yesterday, I was able to resolve it by starting without a battery, and after about a minute of a black screen, I would unplug the power and restart, and it would work after one or more attempts.
Sometimes the PC asks the question: Choose to start Windows in normal mode or in safe mode; you accept, but never choose the option it suggests to analyze the system.
But yesterday, this method no longer worked.
I then followed the advice of an internet user, as bizarre as it may sound, which is to let the graphics card warm up for a while.
I then started the PC by placing it on a blanket to block air circulation for a few minutes, 10 to 15 minutes, black screen, making sure the back of the PC is not burning hot but warm enough. At this point, remove the power cable for about ten seconds, then plug it back in and restart.
It worked for me twice.
My explanation for this phenomenon, in my opinion: Some silicon components of the graphics card are intentionally chosen to be of medium quality to last a certain time (two to three years depending on usage), but when heated, they allow current to flow again.
I had nothing to lose by trying because the repair would cost at least €200, and I was going to throw it away.
If you are in this situation, try it like I did; you have nothing to lose.

I saw someone solve this problem: he had 3 sessions including the Guest session.
The black screens were active on the administrator sessions (not the guest session).
To easily solve the problem (but losing the computer's data ...), you need to create another session from the control panel, change the account type to administrator, and log out.
Then, you need to log into the new session, wait for the desktop to finish loading. Open the control panel and reset.

I have the same problem, but I don't have a guest session.
