Connect a speaker with black and red wire connected via jack to the PC?

Hello everyone,

My problem has probably already been posted on the forum, but I can't understand it with the technical terms. I apologize in advance; I'm not a musician at all, even though I listen to music quite often.

I've had 2 Thomson speakers for a few years that still work very well with an impedance of 8 Ohms and 30 W, which were installed on an old hi-fi system that doesn't work anymore and has been thrown away.
These speakers only have black and red wires, which I recently connected to a jack plug so that I could plug them into devices like an iPhone, a PC, or the TV if needed.
I get sound equivalent to what comes out of my iPhone 5S without them being plugged in themselves, which I find a bit lacking, and on my PC, they only give me a very faint background sound.

I would like to know, and this is where my questions come in, if it’s possible to amplify them?

If so, I suppose I need an amplifier, but I don’t know how I can connect it, or even which one to choose online in terms of price and technical sound aspects, keeping in mind that I don't want something that takes up too much space in my room as well.

Could you please respond simply, as impedance is like a foreign language to me, lol.

Thank you in advance.

Re.

I think the attached diagram will help you. (I completed it) If there is anything you don't understand, feel free to ask.

You need to choose an amplifier with a "line input". You can also use a CD input, but there is a risk of saturation and distortion (not great for listening). After hooking it up, during testing, set the volume potentiometer of the amplifier to zero and gradually increase it. The same goes for the volume of the iPhone or TV.

If you opt for a Hi-Fi system, you will likely have the speakers included. So yours will no longer be useful. Some have a line input, but it's generally on the higher-end models.

If you go for an amplifier, don't exceed 30 to 35 watts RMS max for the benefit of your speakers. The cones of the speakers do not tolerate the overheating of the coils very well.

Good evening . . .

Thanks Jojo and Surf too, that's exactly what I hoped to hear. Now all that’s left for me to do is buy the amp and give it a try ^^
I'll keep you updated if it works (or doesn't actually, but it should normally) ;)

Hello.
      • not even which one to choose online (amp) ***

Sometimes I buy hardware parts on eBay and so far I've never been disappointed. I think it should be the same for amplifiers.
In case you're interested and for a very reasonable price >>>

http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Ampli-MARANTZ-PM-32-STEREO-INTEGRATED-AMPLIFIER/222591770781?hash=item33d380e09d%3Ag%3Aq%7EsAAOSwfVpYvYor

This amp outputs 2 X 35 watts RMS and has an auxiliary input as desired.

For the RCA inputs >>>
R = Red = Right
L = White = Left

This is just a pure example and personal. If you prefer new, we can find that but it will necessarily be 4 to 5 times more expensive.

Cheers.
