moving icons on the desktop Solved

Question

Hello everyone,

First of all, a big thank you for reading me,

Here is my problem: for several days now, every time I start my PC, my desktop icons, which are originally at the top of my desktop, get moved to the left of the screen. I've placed them back at the top one by one, but as soon as I restart, they return to the left.

I’ve scanned with Spybot, Ad-aware, A Squared Free, CCleaner, and an additional scan besides the one automatically scheduled by Kaspersky. I've defragmented my hard drive and cleaned it, but my problem remains.

I have been browsing the forum, but I can’t find a solution to this. When I click on my desktop to Organize Icons by, I see "Align to Grid" checked. I’ve tried unchecking and rechecking it, but the issue remains the same: my icons no longer keep the places I chose for them, which have been the same for years.

Does anyone know why I'm having this problem? I realize it’s not as serious as someone dealing with a security issue like a "virus," but I admit it’s annoying because I constantly have to look for my icons (old habits die hard!!!! smile)

Hello,

A bit late but the right solution is here... because IcoSauve is good but I prefer solving problems rather than workaround them with programs galore...

> click on Start
> Type Regedit in the input box and press enter
> In the registry editor, successively expand:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Do you see, in the right pane, a value NoSaveSettings?
If yes, double-click on it.
If the value data is set to 1, type 0 (the number zero) instead and validate

If the value does not exist, it needs to be created.
This will force Windows to save the desktop settings upon exiting.

I had the same problem for months, I tested it, it works! without adding any program, nothing, just by fixing Windows.

Hello. If you really uncheck everything in arrange icons, does it work too? It can reset as well if you change the resolution, maybe because of a game or something else, it happens sometimes.

Thank you for the reply.

So on my desktop, after a right-click, I have the following checked under rearrange.....

- Show desktop icons
- Align to grid

These are the two lines that are checked.

Try to uncheck the two currently checked lines, wait for the icons to disappear from your desktop, then check them again. Maybe it will work... but not sure... worth a try anyway.

A huge thank you to everyone for your kindness and resolution.

Here's my issue: my icons problem remains, I've tried everything that was suggested to me but nothing works, and since last night my computer takes an incredible amount of time to open windows and my system restore doesn't go beyond Sunday. I did it but nothing changes!

I installed Tune Up Utilities 2007, no change, I even installed Isosauve, which reinstalls my icons all at once, but only after I start my computer and at my request, because with each reboot my icons have changed; they are on the left and always in a different order!

I don't know what else to do or even think!!

I think I remember at that time I had slightly changed the resolution of my screen and everything was back in order! But I had used the Icosauve software for a long time to automatically reorganize those icons.

A few months ago, I had to format my PC which had accumulated a lot of small issues, and ultimately I ended up formatting my PC, and of course my icon problem had disappeared!

But try changing your screen resolution a bit, it may have been altered when installing a game or something else.

That's all I can say, and I hope your issue disappears very quickly.

Thank you for replying to my message. I tried Icosauve, it correctly repositions the icons at startup (by setting it to automatic in the start menu) but when it changes again upon opening certain windows or logs, I have to click on its icon again. I’ve tried quite a few solutions I found on different forums but still no results. I copied my profile by opening another session and there, everything works perfectly. I'm not going to reformat just for that (especially since everything else works normally), unless I have other major problems. If anyone else has an idea, it would be welcome. Thanks again for your post and maybe see you one of these days on this forum. Bye+

I have the same problem as Puce, my desktop icons "reorganize" every time I log in and sometimes when I close a program...

I think I had this problem after using REG SEEKER, a program to clean the registry...

So if there’s a registry expert here, is there a line I could modify that could fix our issue?

right-click on the desktop, then click on "properties," then on the "desktop" tab, then "desktop personalization," then the "web" tab, and finally check the box "lock desktop items"

Tsuki, you just have to go to personalize *right-click*, click on change desktop icons and uncheck the box at the bottom *allow themes to change desktop icons

If you have W7, your problem should be resolved.

Hello, my case is a bit different:
At every startup, it's always the same three or four icons, out of the thirty I have on my desktop, that move to the bottom left. Not the others!

The solution provided here doesn't address my problem, which only resolves the case where ALL the icons move because the wrong display options were chosen.

I have Windows XP Pro SP3, up to date.
The icons that move are internet shortcuts that I use every day.

It’s always the links to the recently used sites that shift. If I stop using certain links, their icons no longer migrate, but the new icons for more recent internet links slide into their place!!

This never concerns icons for software/functions or files. Only internet shortcuts!

What do you think of this instability? Is a DLL in XP causing this?

Some widgets from Yahoo Widgets also move upon restart sometimes, like the calendar or the weather, even though in the options I've chosen to prevent them from being accidentally moved (disable dragging).. (Note: Yahoo Widgets has stopped offering its software that adds widgets to XP; so keep it safe!! ) Only the Metro/RER schedule widget for Paris hasn't worked since then, but the weather is always up to date?

For your information, if the value "NoSaveSettings" is absent, I specify (on Windows 7) that you need to right-click in the right area, click on "New," then on "String Value."
Rename the created value to "NoSaveSettings," then open and modify the value (to 0) as Nicko indicates.

I had the same issue with wandering icons (on WinXP). It occurred after each user session change (or restart with session change). I had a hardware setup with 2 screens (extended desktop). The virtual position of the 2nd screen was slightly different in each session. I resolved the issue by positioning the 2nd screen the same way in each session (Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings tab > click and hold on screen #2 to get the exact pixel coordinates and move it as needed relative to screen #1).
