Icons that move around on the desktop

Question

Hello,

I notice that every time I start my laptop, the desktop icons change position!!!!!!!!!!! I rearrange the icons to my liking, but it's the same story every time I boot up. How can I fix this issue?

Hello,

I had the same problem. You just need to go (on Windows 10) to Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop Icon Settings > Uncheck "Allow themes to change desktop icons"

Hello.  Start -> Run, type regedit.exe (to open the registry).  Expand this branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Shell \ Bags \ 1 \ Desktop  Right-click on the key Desktop -> Permissions, check if you have all rights as a user and administrator.

right-click anywhere on your desktop, then go to View, and see if Auto arrange icons is not checked.

Sorry for only replying now but I was a bit absent.

I want to point out that the icons on the right are shifted to the left, actually a shift by one column of icons. I hope I'm being clear!!!!!!!!

I've had exactly the same issue for the past two days. Not only are the icons shifting all the way to the left, but they're also reverting to "medium icons" when I want them to be "small."
At first glance, there seem to be no viruses after checking with several programs. I don't understand what's going on...

Hello,

right-click on an empty area on your desktop, go to display and there you have large icons etc... see what is checked.
Also, check if auto-arrange is not checked, if it is, uncheck it.

I have the same problem. Automatic reorganization is not checked though! It's honestly annoying Thanks to anyone who can give me a solution preferably without modifying the regedit.exe, I'm not a pro.

Hello.

I had the same issue; I suppose I deleted something I shouldn't have, probably like you did. I suspect CCCleaner.
The only solution I found was to work around the problem.
I cloned my desktop by creating another user, then I deleted my old desktop and user account.

just in case it helps someone...
I just had this issue with the desktop icons moving to the left side of the screen.
For me, it happened when I was playing Diablo 3; as soon as I exited, I had to reorganize my desktop.
The culprit in my case was the Nvidia GeForce Experience software (I have an Asus ROG G752). In the games tab of the software, Nvidia offers to optimize installed games on the PC, and a few days ago, I clicked to optimize Diablo 3. (It took me a while to figure out where the problem was coming from). Anyway, by restoring the settings in the software and removing their optimization, I no longer have the issue; my icons stay in place. For your information, I've optimized plenty of games, like Fallout 4, and there haven't been any crashes; it's just for the optimization of Diablo 3. There's a 1 in 1000 chance you've done the same thing, but just in case... and I informed Nvidia. Have a nice day.
