Hello,
I'm taking my external hard drive out of the box to access some files, but I'm encountering a serious problem.
When I double-click on the drive, the loading is slow and it ends with an error message K/ is not accessible. Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
Then a window opens telling me "You need to format the disk in drive K: before you can use it..", but I will lose everything if I do that.
Then when I run a scan with HDDScan, it finds an error "197 (Current Pending Sector Count)"
When I run a scan with Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows, I click on SMART DATA, and all boxes are checked with a green checkmark (I can't remember the name). And as soon as I start a run test, it finds errors..
Should I format the disk? Can I recover the data with a software afterwards or not?
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 47.0

Hello Madjestyk44 :)
I hope you have resolved the situation, and I must admit that all these symptoms do not leave me optimistic...
Cyclic redundancy check is an error-checking technique aimed at verifying stored data. This error could lead to serious damage (data loss, fatal crash, etc.). CHKDSK is considered to be the tool capable of repairing this error (see my previous message). However, the result cannot be guaranteed at 100%...
As for recovering the data stored on it, it would be better not to format the HDD but to implement some solutions like the suggestions here https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-37640569-recuperer-des-donnees-sur-disque-dur-et-cle-usb or to try a Linux Live CD. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
The "Current pending sector count" (197) is a critical parameter. It indicates the number of unstable sectors that are waiting to be remapped. For the record: sometimes a sector cannot be read. The system attempts to read it again and in the meantime marks this sector as unstable. As long as the access attempts last, the sector is labeled unstable. Later on, it is very likely that the system will be able to read it. In this case, the value of "Current pending sector count" decreases. However, if the sector remains inaccessible, the HDD itself will try to restore the data, transferring it to the reserved area (the reserved sectors it has) and marking the respective sector as reallocating. In this case, we will observe an increase in the value of the Reallocated sector count parameter.
If the S.M.A.R.T. values indicate an increase in the Current pending sector count, it would be better to consider initiating a RMA procedure with the HDD manufacturer (if the HDD is still under warranty). This parameter should be monitored.
Madjestyk44, what is the model of your external HDD?
Looking forward to your reply :)
