Hello,

I’ve been looking all over the internet without really finding an answer (most topics go unanswered).

I have an external hard drive that I’ve had for a few years, and it has always worked fine. However, yesterday when I wanted to copy a movie to a folder, I received an error message: “error 0x80070571: the structure of the disk is corrupted or unreadable.”
When I try to delete a file/folder, I get the same problem. However, I can read a file that is on the disk or copy it to my desktop without any issue.

I thought about backing everything up elsewhere to format it, but there’s 900GB on it.

So I would like to know if there’s a solution to repair the disk without losing the content.

Thanks in advance.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 14.0.1

Well, I noticed (a bit late...) that there is a "repair" option in the properties of my hard drive, and Windows managed to fix it, probably a file that was causing the error on the disk since it deleted a file I had started to copy before a power cut.

So for those who have the same problem:
Computer -> Right Click on the drive -> Properties -> Tools tab -> "Check now".

I just tested this as well and it worked too. Strange nevertheless... and to think that my external hard drive is fairly recent.

      Hello,

More than a year later, I'm having the same problem, very important data on the disk in question and no other storage large enough to copy them. Did your method delete any files on the damaged disk or did everything just sort itself out?

      Thank you.

    Hello

I would be tempted to say as long as you can back up the contents of the disk, do it
at least the most important stuff that you can't re-download
    and then try some repairs
    try this one:
    chkdsk x: /f
where x is the drive letter, of course this command must be run as an administrator in a CMD
    if no change
    try this
    chkdsk x: /r
    if no change:
try a complete formatting (not quick formatting) (you'll lose everything of course)
