Hello,
Asus laptop running original Windows 8.1. Hard drive is dead. Replacing it with a V300 SSD. Need to reinstall Windows. Official Windows 8.1 CD. UEFI BIOS. In order to boot from the recovery CD, I press Escape as on all Asus models in this range at startup. A menu appears but only "Enter Setup" is displayed, allowing me to return to the BIOS. However, there is no trace of the SSD or the DVD drive in this menu. Nor is there any indication of an external DVD drive connected via USB or a bootable USB key. In short, no boot options appear in the UEFI boot menu! Secure Boot and Fast Boot are set to "disable." The SSD and the DVD drive are indeed detected by the motherboard as they both show up when entering the SATA configuration in the BIOS setup. Moreover, by choosing a CSM boot, which means traditional boot, the choice of the DVD drive and the SSD is allowed at startup when I press Escape. In short, how can I boot in UEFI from the DVD drive in order to install Windows 8.1 in UEFI mode and not in "traditional" mode? Thank you!

On the Asus X551CA, as with many recent Asus models with a UEFI BIOS, you can access the BIOS using Del, F2, but also Esc. As mentioned earlier, when the boot menu appears, it is empty in UEFI mode, but this menu contains the lines for the DVD drive and SSD in Legacy mode. In both cases (UEFI mode and Legacy mode), an additional line appears in the boot menu, titled "Enter Setup," allowing access to the BIOS. The lingering question is: how to make the DVD drive and SSD appear in the Boot menu in UEFI mode?
The default values ("Restore Defaults" / Save & Exit) have unfortunately already been applied.
The Windows disk is an official OEM, used multiple times in similar cases of reinstallation on a blank disk on computers that already have their license key in the BIOS: an OEM DVD of Windows allows you to reinstall and activate Windows legally and without tricks as long as the BIOS is in UEFI mode. Originally, I purchased this OEM DVD from LDLC, sold at that time with a license for potential installation on a custom-built PC without any Windows key in the BIOS yet.
Thank you for your assistance.
which version of Windows is it, 32 or 64 bits?
And have you tried this (Google translation)
Press "ESC" or "F2" to enter the BIOS configuration
Under the "Security" tab, select "Secure Boot Menu," disable "Secure Control Boot"
Under the "Boot" tab, enable "Launch CSM"
Save changes and exit
Press "ESC" or "F2" to enter the BIOS configuration again
Under the "Boot" tab, the DVD drive and available flash drives will appear. Set the DVD drive as the first boot option. (You may need to have a boot disk in the drive for it to appear as a choice)
Save changes and exit
Now, the X55U will first attempt to boot from the DVD drive. Additionally, if the boot menu is accessible, the DVD drive, hard drive, and USB flash drives (if detected) appear as boot options.
On some Asus models, you indeed need to enable the CSM option to boot in both UEFI and Legacy (it's not just traditional booting: both options are presented). On others, there’s a specific option that is sometimes disabled (external boot or something like that), and on yet other models, you need to disable "boot on Windows 8," which is enabled by default.
Also, check if you can boot directly from the EFI file of your Asus. Asus BIOS also offers this possibility.
