    Hello.
    Windows version?
Turn off your PC, remove your hard drive, turn the PC back on, reconnect your hard drive, and take a look.

re: if I turn off my laptop, I won’t be able to safely remove the hard drive; I have a lot of valuable documents.
    Thank you.

Hello. We’re talking about an external hard drive, right? If you turn off your PC you can of course disconnect your external hard drive without any danger, because when the PC is off there’s no electrical exchange anymore, so you can remove it any number of times without issue since there’s no risk for your drive or your files. Unplugging it and re-plugging it might make it visible in the taskbar so you can eject it safely.

    Hello grenox35 :)

If you access File Explorer > right-click on the external drive in question > Eject? Is the Eject option present?

Next to your PC's clock, do you see hidden icons > right-click on it > eject the device?

When did this issue first occur? Are there any specific circumstances that could have caused it?

There is another variant to test: Control Panel > Device Manager > Device Manager > Disk drives, then right-click the disk in question > Properties > Policies > and check the box Optimize for performance or Quick removal. A restart might be required.

    To be continued!

    Let me know! :)
